Sea Change OUR MISSION | SEA Change

We seek peace and justice, equality and equity, along with liberty and safety for all who live, work, study in or visit El Segundo.

WHO WE ARE

Sea Change is a community activist network committed to combating systemic racism and discrimination in El Segundo, California, in order to create a safe, inclusive, and equitable community for all. We know specific communities are disproportionately disadvantaged by systemic racism, sexism, elitism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and gender discrimination and we seek to remedy thos

e wrongs. We know anti-Black and Brown racism is baked into the DNA of El Segundo and continues to negatively impact the city to this day. We are committed to rooting out the problem and repairing the damage. We are demanding change, creating awareness, and building a truly united El Segundo. In addition to our commitment to achieving meaningful and measurable change at the local level, we support and will assist state, national and global efforts that align with our Mission.

We're back this weekend for our First Saturday Of Month Stand Up, Speak Out demonstration.

This will be our first protest since ICE agents fatally shot two men earlier this month: Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, a husband and father in Texas, and Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, 26, a husband and father in Maine.

Join us Saturday, August 1, from 10:30AM to 12:00PM at Main & Imperial in El Segundo as we stand up for democracy, justice, and accountability.

Bring a sign, or make one at our poster-making station. Peaceful, community-centered, family-friendly, and open to everyone. More info at link in comment.

After a busy few weeks of City Council meetings, Planning Commission hearings, public comments, and a few meaningful civic victories, we're using our July Sea Social to simply enjoy each other's company.

No featured speaker. No presentation. No agenda.

Just an opportunity to get together, celebrate what our community has accomplished, reflect on the work ahead, and raise a glass with neighbors who care about El Segundo.

Just weeks ago, the Charter City measure appeared to be on a clear path to the November ballot until sustained public engagement and questioning brought the effort to a halt. On Thursday, a proposed 230,780-square-foot data center drew such overwhelming public opposition that the developer withdrew his application before the Planning Commission could finish its hearing.

The outcome of both of these proposals is a reminder that civic engagement matters. Residents didn't simply react. They became informed. They challenged assumptions. They held decision-makers accountable. And in doing so, they changed the conversation.

That lesson shouldn't end with the Charter City proposal or the data center. As El Segundo considers other decisions that will shape our future, we must continue to pay attention, stay informed, and make our voices heard.

Government works best when the community participates. That will always be the greatest form of local control.

DATA CENTER UPDATE

It was standing room only at the El Segundo Planning Commission meeting tonight (July 9) as Commissioners were set to vote on a proposed Data Center.

The public opposition was so overwhelming that the applicant withdrew his application in the middle of the meeting in what City officials called unprecedented.

This is what democracy looks like. Thank you to ALL the members of the public who showed up and spoke out tonight. Video in comments!

The El Segundo Planning Commission is considering a proposal to demolish the Hyatt Place at Maple & Nash and replace it with a 230,780 sq. ft. DATA CENTER and electrical SUBSTATION.

Thursday, July 9 | 5:30 p.m.
City Council Chambers
350 Main Street

The proposed project raises significant concerns about resource demands, environmental impacts, and the long-term quality of life for El Segundo residents and businesses. Despite its scale, the project inexcusably relies on an Environmental Impact Report that is now nearly a quarter century old. Make your voice heard.

🌈 Gundo Pride is almost here! 🌈

Join us THIS Sunday, June 28, from 10AM to 2PM at the Rec Park Fire Circle for the 3rd Annual Gundo Pride!

This free, family-friendly celebration is organized entirely by local volunteers and neighbors. Our goal is to promote visibility and connection while continuing to build on the progress our community has made toward becoming a more welcoming and inclusive place.

We'll kick things off with our One Mile Pride Walk through downtown El Segundo before returning to the festival in the park.

This year's event features Pickle (West Hollywood's Inaugural Drag Laureate), Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles (the world's first LGBTQ+ mariachi band), The Seconds (the ESUSD middle school band taking the South Bay by storm), plus DJ Mindy Mars, face painting, arts & crafts, a photo booth, and FREE pizza, BBQ, ice cream, and cookies — oh, my!

Please arrive by 10:20AM if you'd like to join the Pride Walk, and don't forget to RSVP so we can finalize food and supplies. Visit the link in the image or simply Google Gundo Pride to find the Eventbrite page to RSVP.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to our incredible sponsors for believing in Gundo Pride and helping make this event possible. Your generosity allows us to keep this celebration free and open to the entire community.

Join us at Brewport Tap House & Kitchen on Thursday, June 18 from 6:30PM to 8:00PM for a conversation about Charter Cities with special guest Mike Jenkins, founding member of MB United and a former city attorney who has spent more than four decades working in municipal law.

Jenkins recently wrote an article for the MB United Newsletter where he addressed the common claim that Charter Cities are exempt from state housing laws and stressed that communities should carefully examine both the benefits and risks before pursuing charter status.

With the El Segundo City Council actively considering a Charter City ballot measure, we'll discuss what Charter City status actually means and what powers it may or may not provide.

Bring your questions, your curiosity, and your neighbors. And please RSVP at the link in comments.

Just two months ago, the El Segundo City Council first substantively discussed becoming a Charter City.

Now, with virtually no meaningful public outreach, workshops, advisory committee, or citywide engagement process, the Council majority is already moving toward placing the issue on the November ballot.

This Tuesday is the second and final public hearing before the Council moves toward a July vote to put the measure on the ballot.

Residents deserve better than buried notices, dense agenda packets, and a rushed process for one of the biggest governance changes in city history.
