Tonight, members of the Eldon Fire Department and the Moreau Fire Protection District took advantage of the beautiful weather by coming together for a joint vehicle extrication training.

This type of training allows neighboring departments to work side by side, strengthening teamwork while learning different skills and becoming familiar with each other’s tools and techniques. These partnerships are especially important in the event of a large scale incident that requires multiple departments to respond together.

We also used this opportunity to give our newer volunteers valuable hands on experience, helping them learn what it takes to safely remove a patient from a vehicle using specialized equipment.

A big thank you goes out to Champion Towing for generously donating vehicles for us to train on and for going above and beyond by providing a meal for all of the volunteers. We truly appreciate the continued support from our community and are grateful for their partnership.

Working together through trainings like this helps build strong relationships between departments, ultimately improving our ability to respond effectively, save lives, and protect property.

Finally, thank you to all of our volunteers who took time out of their evening to participate and continue learning. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.

The Eldon Firefighters Association is hosting its annual spring gun raffle, offering a shotgun as the prize in place of a turkey season theme. Following tradition, only 350 tickets will be sold, and they are now available for purchase. Members of the local fire department are selling tickets, so please reach out to your local firefighters to obtain one. Don't miss this opportunity to win a new firearm. Proceeds from the raffle will support the Rick Callahan scholarship, awarded annually to a deserving student at Eldon High School pursuing a career in public safety. The Eldon Firefighters Association values community support and is privileged to provide assistance to those entering this noble profession.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Billy Hurts. Billy retired from the Columbia Fire Department and subsequently dedicated himself to training numerous departments across Missouri in vehicle education, ensuring they operate at peak readiness. His passion lay in assisting others, whether through training or supporting safety crews in sprint car racing. Tragically, Billy lost his life while responding to aid a driver in distress. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. Billy's legacy serves as a true inspiration to us all.

Today's event was a resounding success. It was excellent to see everyone turn out in support of a worthy cause. The Chili cook-off events are consistently a highlight, and we managed to secure a victory today. The Eldon firefighter association claimed first place in the first responder category, which made the challenge even more rewarding. This event presented a great challenge, and we look forward to our next endeavor.

Miller County Coroner’s Office

The Miller County Coroner’s Office confirms that Amanda Rodgers, age 35, was located deceased following a motor vehicle crash in Miller County.
On February 2, 2026, the Miller County Coroner’s Office responded to a motor vehicle collision on US-54 near Howser Road. Ms. Rodgers was pronounced deceased at 0143 hours by Coroner Caleb Shelton.

Ms. Rodgers’ vehicle was located off the roadway and concealed by a fallen tree, making it difficult to observe from the roadway. The vehicle was discovered by a Miller County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was actively searching the area.

This incident was the subject of a previously issued Endangered Person Advisory. With the recovery of Ms. Rodgers, the advisory is no longer active.

Out of respect for the family, no further details will be released at this time.

The Miller County Coroner’s Office extends its deepest condolences to Ms. Rodgers’ family and loved ones during this difficult time.
