My heart is broken for the DeLong family. They are pillars of our community and for generations have stood on the front lines to protect all of us.

Please say a prayer tonight for this family, and for every law enforcement officer and first responder out there protecting this community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the DeLong Family and members of the Columbia Police Department.

Yesterday Laina Shoemake and I went to visit our daughter for her last shift at Gyromania Grill-Elgin SC. Please support Gyromania at their Elgin or Columbia locations - great food made (and served) by better people!

Next week we move both the kids to college and will be empty nesters. It’s surreal and emotional.

In these moments of reflection, I find myself so grateful for those who have helped our children grow into the amazing adults they’ve become. That includes the employers that gave them a chance to earn their own money and helped develop their work ethic. So thank you Joseph Cornelius (and your whole family) for your friendship, and especially for giving my daughter a chance while being a great boss for her.

Another wonderful Back to School event here in Elgin!

This annual event highlights the absolute best of our community. The wet weather did not stop the many churches, civic organizations, first responders, and volunteers from coming together to ensure the future of Kershaw County, SC is equipped for the school year.

This is one my favorite events, and I thank everyone who was a part of this. I have to give a special shout out to the ladies of Blanketing Families, Inc. - who always invite me out to help, to Blaney Baptist Church for hosting this event given the weather, Melissa Brazell Emmons-Mayor of Elgin and the Town of Elgin for all their logistical support, and Sgt. Misty Burroughs with the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office for making some amazing balloon animals while demonstrating firsthand what community policing looks like.

I wish everyone all the best in the upcoming school year.
