As 9-1-1 systems continue evolving toward Next Generation 9-1-1, cybersecurity is no longer just an IT concern β it is fundamental to operational resilience, public trust, and the continuity of emergency response.
A new article in the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch - IAED Journal explores the growing cybersecurity challenges facing emergency communications centers as NG9-1-1 capabilities expand nationwide, including video, real-time text, AI-assisted tools, and increasingly interconnected IP-based infrastructure.
NENA Chief Technology Officer Brandon Abley highlights an important reality for every 9-1-1 agency: βYou just donβt know how many holes are in your systems until they find them. Ideally they are found by a professional, not an attacker.β
The article also highlights the importance of preparedness, training, partnerships, redundancy, and cybersecurity awareness at every level of a 9-1-1 organization.
NENA continues to work with public safety stakeholders, federal partners, and industry experts to develop the standards, guidance, and best practices that help strengthen the security and resilience of NG9-1-1 systems nationwide.
