As 9-1-1 systems continue evolving toward Next Generation 9-1-1, cybersecurity is no longer just an IT concern β€” it is fundamental to operational resilience, public trust, and the continuity of emergency response.

A new article in the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch - IAED Journal explores the growing cybersecurity challenges facing emergency communications centers as NG9-1-1 capabilities expand nationwide, including video, real-time text, AI-assisted tools, and increasingly interconnected IP-based infrastructure.

NENA Chief Technology Officer Brandon Abley highlights an important reality for every 9-1-1 agency: β€œYou just don’t know how many holes are in your systems until they find them. Ideally they are found by a professional, not an attacker.”

The article also highlights the importance of preparedness, training, partnerships, redundancy, and cybersecurity awareness at every level of a 9-1-1 organization.

NENA continues to work with public safety stakeholders, federal partners, and industry experts to develop the standards, guidance, and best practices that help strengthen the security and resilience of NG9-1-1 systems nationwide.

The program, which aired on NPR stations across America, includes a report from NENA's most recent 9-1-1 Goes to Washington advocacy event and highlights NENA members' advocacy for NG9-1-1 funding and reclassification of 9-1-1 telecommunicators.

Hours behind the console can mean an achy body after the shift. A jaw you forgot you were clenching. Shoulders that haven't dropped in hours. Hands that are still braced for the next call.

Multiply that times weeks/months/years... It all adds up!

We put together a simple daily movement checklist built specifically for dispatchers. No gym required. No hour-long workout. Just small, intentional resets throughout your shift.

Print it out, tape it to your console, and let it remind you to care for yourself the same way you care for your callers.
