Breezy to windy conditions expected once again across northern Nevada today with showers mainly north of US Highway 50. Some minor snow accumulations are anticipated in the northern sections of Elko and Humboldt counties. Look for showers to linger just north of the I-80 corridor clear through the week as strong westerly flow brings in more moisture and warmer temperatures for the region.

With a new month AND a new year here, we have the climate summary from December as well as the climate summary for 2021!

Overall, December was wet and snowy. This was a very much-needed setup due to the extensive drought over the course of the year. Ely and Eureka saw their 2nd wettest December on record! In terms of snowfall, Ely and Winnemucca saw their 2nd snowiest December on record!

2021 overall was warm and wet, but most of that moisture came from the active weather we saw in December. All of our climate sites saw average temperatures that placed them somewhere in their top 10 warmest year on record!

What weather event from last year really sticks out in your mind? We would probably have to say that the extreme drought conditions are really prominent in our memory here.

A special weather statement has been issued for much of the forecast area for cold temperatures with potential for even colder wind chill values. Remember, with little wind, your body is able to maintain a thin layer of warmer air between your skin and colder air surrounding you. However, higher winds can eliminate that thin layer, and your body can begin to cool at a dangerously fast rate. Learn more about the current weather statement here: https://nwschat.weather.gov/p.php?pid=202201021119-KLKN-WWUS85-SPSLKN

Additional snow showers will continue today before winding down
this evening. Many areas will see around an inch or less, though
up to two inches are possible across some of the valleys in
northeast and east-central Nevada. Mountainous locations are
expected to receive two to four inches or more of new snow.
Breezy winds today could lead to more blowing and drifting snow
as well. While the holiday weekend looks to be on the dry side,
confidence is high that much colder temperatures will be felt as
highs will reach the the 20s to low 30s, with some upper teens
possible Saturday. Nighttime lows expected to dip into the single
digits to single digits below zero Friday and Saturday night,
though some of the colder locales could see double digit below
zero readings.

We're receiving reports of slick and slippery roads in the Elko and Spring Creek area. With temperatures below freezing combined with the snowfall earlier this evening, this will continue to be a concern. Take it slow on the roads, and make sure you leave plenty of space between yourself and other vehicles!

Snow showers will occur on and off through this afternoon and again Friday as a weak system moves through the area. Light, fluffy snow combined with winds will create blowing snow and reduced visibility at times.

For the weekend, a ridge of high pressure will greet the region giving a break to the active weather, leading to clear skies. These clear skies combined with new snowfall will create chilly temperatures for the weekend. Morning lows Saturday and Sunday will be near or below zero for most, some valley locations may drop into the negative teens. Saturday morning highs forecasted to be in the teens to low 20s as the cold air settles in for a weekend stay.
