Deputy Fire Chief Jack Snyder was appointed as the City of Elko Fire Chief at the city council meeting on October 12th. His appointment will begin on December 25th, the day after Fire Chief Matthew Griego begins retirement. Congratulations Chief Snyder!
Captain James Johnston received his Utah Managing Fire Designation award at the Elko City Council Meeting on October 12. The Utah Fire Officer Development System is based on the International Association of Fire Chiefs Professional Development Handbook with some additional Utah requirements. The fire officer designation reflects a level of knowledge and a comprehensive skill set that exceeds NFPA standards. It is intended to be a guide for those seeking a career path and recognition of achievement leading to a higher degree of professionalism. Congratulations Captain Johnston on all your hard work.
Smoke alarm tips ✅
🚒 Smoke alarms should be in every sleeping room, in hallways and on every level of your home, including the basement.
🚒 Know the sound your smoke alarm makes and what to do if it goes off.
🚒 Test your smoke alarms once a month.
🚒 Smoke alarm batteries need to be changed every 6 months to a year.
🚒 Smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years.
Today, the City of Elko Aircraft Rescue Firefighters (ARFF) conducted their annual live burns at the Elko Regional Airport. This is an annual FAA requirement that must be met to keep air service to Elko and ensure that our responders are ready and proficient in complex incidents with aircraft crashes and fires. The training today included simulated fuel fires, engine fires and fuselage fires that our firefighters had to combat with handlines and the ARFF crash vehicles. In addition, the City of Elko Fire Department would like to thank Western States Propane for their generous donation of propane, truck and personnel to ensure that this training was a success.
Last week the City of Elko Fire Department hosted ‘Mastering Fire Ground Command Calm the Chaos’ class, instructed by retired Battalion Chief Anthony Kastros from Sacramento Metro Fire Dept. The class consisted of a two day operations level training with students from Elko Fire, Elko County Fire, Reno Fire and San Jose Fire. The last three days consisted of a train the trainer class to allow for instructors to teach others around the region. The class taught our personnel to handle emergencies at the strategic, tactical and task level. The training will enhance the City of Elko Fire Departments operations and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our services to the community.

Crews return home from 16 day assignment to California wildfires.
Good morning! The City of Elko Fire Department will be conducting training at the old Denny’s (2405 Mountain City Highway) from 830-430. Please don’t be alarmed if you see smoke coming from the building.
Night operations on the Antelope Fire.
Our crews have been reassigned to the Antelope Fire in Northern California. This fire crossed containment lines which caused for immediate evacuation of the area. Crews are assisting with direct attack of the fire to help contain the spread in the Medicine Lake area.
Unfortunately due to the rise in COVID-19 cases within Elko County we have made the decision to cancel the Fire Prevention Picnic that was scheduled for this Saturday 9/11/21. Please stay tuned to our Facebook as we will be posting fire prevention information over the next few weeks.
Over the past several days our crew on the Caldor Fire has been assisting with falling trees and securing dozer lines behind housing subdivisions in Christmas Valley.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of one of our Firefighters, Jerid Vance. Jerid began with our volunteer staff in 2011. His personality could light up a room. He truly embodied what it takes to be a member of this department. His positive attitude and willingness to help others are a few of the things that made him a great person, friend, and firefighter. Jerid was chosen as “Volunteer Firefighter of the Year 2019”. Please keep Amanda, and their two children Elijah and Noelle in your thoughts during this time.

This year, on March 14, states throughout the U.S. will be turning their clocks forward*. Many people will use this opportunity to change their home’s smoke alarm batteries as well.
Because working smoke alarms are a critical element of home fire safety, NFPA supports any and all efforts to reinforce the importance of working batteries. However, today’s smoke alarms are not all designed the same, making battery messaging more nuanced.
Following is information to help make sure all smoke alarms have working batteries, accounting for the multiple types of smoke alarms on the market and their varying battery requirements:
Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years. If the alarm chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace the entire smoke alarm right away.
Smoke alarms with any other type of battery need a new battery at least once a year. If that alarm chirps, warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.
When replacing a battery, follow manufacturer’s list of batteries on the back of the alarm or manufacturer’s instructions. Manufacturer’s instructions are specific to the batteries (brand and model) that must be used. The smoke alarm may not work properly if a different kind of battery is used.

Earlier this week the State announced a new COVID-19 vaccine administration prioritization strategy that moved from the previous tier system to the two lane system you see below, allowing more flexibility in administering the vaccine.
After announcing this new change, Elko County received approval to move to Tier 2 on Tuesday. We are currently in the process of planning vaccine events over the next few weeks. More to come on the events tomorrow, along with a survey to help us get an accurate count of those interested in receiving the vaccine and to plan future events.
We have partnered with Nevada Health Centers and the Elko Senior Center to provide vaccine to those aged 70 and older. Those who meet this criteria and are interested in receiving the vaccine are encouraged to contact the Senior Center at (775) 738-3030 to pre-register. As of today, more than 400 pre-registrations have been received. Should we not be able to vaccinate all those who pre-register, we will work on additional events to ensure all who want to be vaccinated, can be.

ECFPD Station 21, Station 28, Spring Creek Volunteer Fire Department along with the City of Elko Fire Dept., NHP, Elko County Ambulance, Elko County Sheriff, Elko Police Dept. and Carlin Volunteer Fire Department delivered Christmas gifts to children in need this morning for the annual shop with a cop.
