Whipps Garden Cemetery Whipps Garden Cemetery is a place of the living, not the dead—alive with the beauty of nature. Whipps Garden Cemetery is a one-acre site located at 3651 St.

Johns Lane, Ellicott City, MD 21042. The land was purchased by William Whipps in 1855 to serve as a family burial ground for the Whipps family of Howard County. The Whipps were well-known farmers and merchants of the day who also served as blacksmiths at Oakland Manor--now Oakland Mills in Columbia, Maryland. In the later 1800s burial lots were sold to other families. The last burials took place i

n the early 1900s. After that, the site became increasingly overgrown and vandalism took a heavy toll. Many gravestones were damaged, destroyed or stolen. In 1987, members of the St. Johns Community Association, in cooperation with the Whipps family, began a program of restoration, protection and preservation. Today, the cemetery is owned by The Friends of the Whipps Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, Inc. The cemetery is supported by fund-raisers and donations. It is maintained entirely by volunteers, primarily the University of Maryland Extension Howard County Master Gardeners. At the Whipps Cemetery Park-often called the Angel Garden-Howard County Master Gardeners plant and maintain heritage and native species in a variety of different settings, interspersed by pathways, benches, and family tombstones. The plants are typical of those grown in Maryland gardens of the 1800s. The Whipps Cemetery gardens educate and inspire Howard County residents to preserve old cemeteries as small community parks, showcasing local history and culture in the style of the famous garden cemeteries of the 19th century.

These cool, cloudy days make the cemetery feel like a verdant oasis with reflecting pools, rain drop-lined leaves, and the smell of plants and earth.

You might not think this is the perfect time to visit, but it is one of the most peaceful times to experience the cemetery, read the poetry on the headstones, and check out what's in bloom.

We are grateful for this rain and the chance to slow down during this busy season.

Cedars are a traditional cemetery tree and have extensive connections with spirituality, the afterlife, and symbolism. Many cultures including ancient Egyptian and many Native American cultures regarded cedars to be sacred trees and cedars are mentioned throughout the Bible, as well. Their long-lasting wood and evergreen needles represent endurance and eternity, along with other evergreens like yew and cypress.

Lore and superstition surround the trees in many folklore connections including:
If you plant a cedar, you will bring good luck to the location
If a cedar dies in your yard, someone in your family will die
Cedars repel evil spirits
It is bad luck to bring cedar branches into your house outside of the Christmas season

Traditions and myths aside, the cedars at Whipps Garden Cemetery are likely descendants of original trees planted by those tending to the graves of their loved ones buried here in our cemetery.

On Mother’s Day, we remember two of the mothers connected to Whipps Garden Cemetery.

While there are a number of mothers who lovingly chose headstones and wrote epitaphs for their babies and husbands, Sarah Graham’s custom inscription for her son William shows the depth of a mother’s love:

“I watched my lovely boy with a mothers fond delight;
While he toiled for my support and did what he thought best;
I loved him much and well I might, to honor me was his delight.
But oh how sad it is to sever my darling William and me forever.
No not forever but through Jesus blood.
I hope we’ll meet live with God."

May all mothers (with us or not) be thought of and remembered with as much dignity as Sarah Whipps (1808-1865), wife of William Whipps – “A tender wife, a mother kind, a faithful friend and true. A noble, pure and generous mind, her equals here were few.”

📰: Maryland Forest Service Launches “Maryland 250” White Oak Contest

The Maryland Forest Service and the Maryland Forestry Foundation are launching the “Maryland 250” White Oak Contest in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

The contest invites residents and visitors to search Maryland’s State Forests for the largest white oak trees. Cash prizes of up to $500 will be awarded to the individuals who find the largest five trees on public lands.

The contest runs from May 1 through Dec. 31, 2026. Participants will identify and measure specimens of the white oak (Quercus alba), Maryland’s state tree, within eligible State Forest lands. State Forests are distinct from State Parks. For Chesapeake Forest Lands, only white oaks located on public hunting lands are eligible. Sending a big thank you to dedicated volunteers, HoCo Master Gardeners and plant-loving customers for a successful Plant Sale!

It takes hours of planning and many hands to put together this fundraiser. All proceeds from the sale go to the maintenance and preservation of the non-profit Whipps Garden Cemetery.
