On the Margins of Home: a free fall film series of Spanish and Latin American cinema

The Department of World Languages and Cultures invites the Elon community to "En los márgenes del hogar / On the Margins of Home," a five-film series of recent Hispanic and Latin American cinema running this fall.

The series is built around one deceptively simple question: what does it mean to belong - to a nation, a family, a body, a system - and what happens when that belonging is threatened, reinvented, or revealed to have been fragile all along? Across six countries of production and registers from near-future thriller to animated epic to family tragicomedy, these films place their characters at the edges of home.

All screenings are free and open to the public, on and off campus. Films are in Spanish with English subtitles.

Friday, September 11 · 5:30 PM · Turner Theatre
Artificial Justice (Justicia artificial) · 2024 · Dir. Simón Casal · Spain
In a near-future Spain, an AI system stands ready to replace human judges in the courtroom. A taut thriller about what we surrender when machines take over the work of justice.

Friday, September 25 · 5:30 PM · Turner Theatre
Beloved Tropic (Querido Trópico) · 2024 · Dir. Ana Endara · Colombia / Panamá
Panama's official submission to the 98th Academy Awards. A Colombian immigrant caregiver and a wealthy woman slipping into dementia forge a bond that neither blood nor class can explain.

Thursday, October 22 · 5:30 PM · KOBC 101
Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires (Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios) · 2025 · Dir. Juan Meza-León · México / USA
A globally recognized superhero transplanted into Aztec civilization at the moment of the Spanish conquest — popular culture as a vehicle for decolonial imagination.

Thursday, October 29 · 5:30 PM · Turner Theatre
Zafari · 2024 · Dir. Mariana Rondón · Brasil / México / Perú / Venezuela
A dystopian black comedy charting the collapse of Venezuelan society — formally inventive, morally urgent, and squarely on the questions of inequality and migration across the Americas.

Friday, November 13 · 5:30 PM · Turner Theatre
Pérez Rodríguez · 2024 · Dir. Humberto Tavárez · Dominican Republic
A Dominican family whose celebrations become the stage for secrets, conflict, and love across generations. Tender and satirical in equal measure.

The series is made possible by a Pragda Spanish Film Club grant.

Welcome back from break! This Wednesday, we’re highlighting “Mekureme:cʰen.”

The word has come to be known as “welcome” in the Yesa:sahį́ language of the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation Tribe. Its original meaning, “nailbiter,” comes from a time of stress experienced by Native American children in a colonial school in the early 1700s.
