Congratulations to our very own Cmdr. Yolanda Wilks for completing the Washington Metropolitan Police Dept. Leadership Academy!

The program is designed to develop officers from across the country and internationally- providing them with the fundamental tools, ideas, and strategies to expand their foundational knowledge of leadership, preparing them for administrative and executive roles in their respective agency.

The commander is a 15-year veteran of the MPD and is currently heading the Implementation Unit and the department’s efforts enacting the MDHR settlement agreement. We’re always grateful for opportunities to develop our staff, see them grow throughout their careers, and advance our department with its future leaders.

Dear NLPOA Members,

It has come to the attention of the National Executive Board that on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, FBI Omaha agents executed search warrants on the homes of an Omaha City Councilman, two Omaha Police Department Officers, and the offices of the Police Athletics for Community Engagement (PACE), a non-profit organization with strong ties to the Omaha Latino Peace Officers Association. The two OPD Officers are also members of the Omaha LPOA chapter. The two Omaha Officers were placed on administrative leave by the Chief of the Omaha Police Department and will also be subject to an internal investigation. The Omaha LPOA has been fully cooperative with the FBI during this investigation.

In accordance with the U.S. Constitution, all individuals are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty by a jury of their peers. Until the conclusion of the FBI investigation and any subsequent prosecution, conviction or acquittal, the NLPOA will stand by all members of the Omaha LPOA chapter.

The NLPOA Executive Board is monitoring this situation and will await the conclusion of the investigation. Although unfortunate, this isolated incident should not reflect negatively upon the numerous NLPOA chapters or their members across our great nation, which on a daily basis support and promote the mission of the NLPOA by eliminating prejudice and discrimination in the criminal justice system, support and advocate for the personal and professional development of its members, prevent and reduce juvenile delinquency, and bridge the gap between the community and the police.

Anita joined LVMPD in 2007. Before that, she had never dreamed of having a career in law enforcement. Her background was in banking, but she saw a news story that Metro was in need of Dispatchers. She was raising three kids by herself, at the time, and the benefits and pay were just what she was looking for. After gaining self-belief, she applied.

Anita was in dispatch for two years before switching to Law Enforcement Support Technician for another two. She promoted to Evidence Technician and spent 10 years in the evidence vault before becoming a Human Resources Technician.

What Anita loves about LVMPD is the number of opportunities to try different things. If you are looking to try something new, you can do a sit-along with someone in a department you are interested in. She also loves the support from everyone. Especially in Human Resources, they can help you with career counseling and connect you with the right people. Anita's advice? "Be willing to put in the work and you will have an amazing career."

Thank you for everything you do for us, Anita!
