Southwick House

Providing transitional housing and supportive services to
Emporia and surrounding communities for the next 100 years.

Our mission is to empower individuals and families to develop skills to achieve and maintain independence through transitional housing and supportive services. For 100 years, Southwick House (formerly Plumb Place) served the housing needs of single women in the Emporia and surrounding communities. The generous gift of Carrie Southwick Plumb’s home provided stable, affordable, and safe housing for the most vulnerable of populations. Maintaining a 100-year-old National Register Historic Property combined with limitations on service to only single women brought about change to the organization and service model. In
2023, Southwick House completed a reorganization of mission and embarked on a capital campaign to build a new facility for the next 100 years of service to our most vulnerable populations. For more information about Southwick our timeline and services please visit www.southwickhouse.org

Sometimes people ask why constructing a facility like Southwick House costs more than building a regular home. These photos aren't glamorous, but they demonstrate some important aspects of our building - safety and durability. When you build a residential facility like Southwick House, materials have to be rated higher than for a typical home. Extra features for fire suppression and higher impact resistance are required by code and regulations, and they are important for ensuring the safety of our residents.

Once the building is complete, none of these things will be visible to people who pass through our doors, but they'll keep our building and residents safer every day.

Big thanks to Senne Company and BG Consultants, Inc. for all the thought and work that has gone into making our building safe and built to last long into the future.
