Hands Across Cultures Corporation (HACC)

Hands Across Cultures Corporation (HACC) Hands Across Cultures Corporation (HACC) is a private, nonprofit agency dedicated to improving the health, education, and well-being of the people of northern New Mexico through family-centered approaches deeply rooted in the multicultural traditions

Hands Across Cultures, Corp. (HACC) Organizational Mission- HACC was formed in 1992 to address the high rates of families and youth experiencing human service related problems, particularly through disease prevention and health promotion efforts. A major focus is alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) abuse behavior in Northern Santa Fe and Southern Rio Arriba Counties. The mission of HACC is: Improve the social functioning, health, education and well-being of the people of Northern New Mexico through culturally appropriate, youth and family-centered approaches deeply rooted in the multicultural traditions of the communities. HACC has been a community leader in this area when it comes to substance abuse prevention. The La Vision del Valle Coalition, which is conducted by HACC, has been working with the Pojoaque Valley area and discussing the issues that community members believe is most affecting our community. The issues have been mentioned most through meetings and community forums has been binge drinking among youth, low perception of risk, and minimal enforcement of alcohol laws. has conducted an in-depth assessment of resources available in the greater Espanola and Pojoaque Valley areas. The assessment sought to determine the level of capacity throughout our area for delivering prevention, treatment and aftercare services. Secondarily, we sought to understand the various capabilities for developing and implementing new programs to fill gaps. Our efforts also brought to light the opinions and perceptions of leadership roles and line level roles relative to the prevention field. Preliminary findings suggest that many resources are available; however, most are severely funding, are often on the brink of closing operations. These factors impede greatly the ability of many organizations to serve in the prevention capacity.

Mission: To improve the health, education and well being of the people of Northern New Mexico through family-centered approaches deeply rooted in the multicultural traditions of their communities.

A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.

"A culture that forgets its past has no future."

The think one of the things we love most about going to Pojoaque high school is the energy we get from the students. Yesterdays presentation about Culture went off without a hitch and again we were very pleased with the students response to "What are some of the gifts you get from your Culture?"
• Inspiration
• Cooking/food
• Understanding/helping
• A grandmother who loves sports
• Pottery/Art
• Languages
• Farming
• Religion
• Prayer/Church
• Teaches good choices
• Respect/love
• Knowledge
• Keep family together
• Likes to see happy family
• Close family
• Music
the fact that most of these things are not material objects, makes us very proud. We would like to give a shout out to Mrs. Debra Minyard, the wonderful teacher of the class we spoke to. and thank you to the students for your participation. We had a blast and look forward to visiting PVHS again.

Racial Healing/Justice Initiative is the latest project for HACC, and we are very pleased to report the reaction we are getting from the students. The Racial Healing/Justice Initiative is where we go to classrooms and ask students what they define Culture as. and we were very pleased with what the students had to say by the end of the presentation "I learned how others feel about other traditions and I enjoyed hearing new ideas", "our culture makes us strong". Their responses will touch on points that we wanted them to learn. These presentations reengage our teenagers to cultural roots. La Cultura Cura.

The Starfish Story...
One day, a man was waling along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?" The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die."

The dedication of mentors has helped countless young men and women succeed when they might have otherwise fallen short of their full potential. Mentors can provide a steady presence and share their valuable knowledge and experiences. Even brief amounts of quality time set aside by these compassionate adults can have a lasting impact on the development of a child.
