The Parks and Recreation staff continue to ensure that all County owned parks are safe for children and members of the public. As you all may know, currently all parks are closed due to the current health orders. However, recently we have discovered a major problem at the Joe Romero Memorial Park in San Pedro. Today field staff picked up multiple syringes, empty whiskey bottles, and lose trash left in the parking lot. This has become a constant problem at this location. The County does not allow this type of behavior or activity on any of its properties. We ask residents to please be vigilant if you pass by the area, and if you see any suspicious activity please report it to law enforcement immediately. Again the parks are closed to the public, and so there should be no activity at these locations at this time. We thank you for your assistance in helping us keep our public recreational facilities clean and safe!

We are devastated and extremely sad to announce that we have to CANCEL our event entirely. Our staff worked tremendously hard to put this together and looked forward to it. However, due to unforseen circumstances, we had to make the hard decision. We deeply apologize to the community. Thank you for understanding.

Greetings Everyone,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience during this time. As many of you are aware the County’s Parks and Recreation Department, along with the County Management made the difficult decision to close all Parks and Recreational facilities back in April, this was in response to the rapid spread of the Corona virus (COVID-19). Since that time the County has continued to monitor the State issued Health Orders, and the CDC Guidelines to determine a re-Opening process.

Please note that effective Thursday, October 1, 2020 all County Parks will Re-Open for the public to use. Please note that with this re-opening there will be guidelines that the public is asked to follow in order to use the facilities. Below you will find a listing of a few of the COVID-19 requirements for public use. Please note that we are encouraging everyone to abide by these rules in order to ensure everyone’s safety while visiting the parks. Please note that our staff will be doing their best to ensure playground equipment and tables are sanitized, but we still encourage members of the public to carry the proper hand sanitizer with them as well. We would also like to ask that the public ensure to keep their parks clean, by using trash receptacles that are provided at each location. Finally please note that the Alternative school Gym will remain closed at the current time, and will be re-opened at a later date to be announced. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the Parks & Recreation office at 505-753-6663 during normal business hours. Thank you!

Covid-Safe Census Fiesta in Española
Featuring free food from Celebrity Chef Fernando Ruiz, comedy of Carlos Medina & prizes this weekend

ESPAÑOLA – After the resounding success of Labor Day weekend, the covid-safe census drive-thru effort will continue this weekend at Washington Federal Bank in Española. This weekend’s event will feature local celebrity Chef Fernando Ruiz, a former winner of Chopped and Guy’s Grocery Games of the Food Network, offering free Mexican street corn to participants. A sound stage will feature a variety of entertainment and the popular Norteño entertainer, Carlos Media, will MC on Sunday.
The family-friendly event is meant to offer a bit of respite and fun as the summer and the census campaign comes to a close on Sept 30. As an incentive the County is giving away close to $15,000 in gift cards from local businesses, as well as prizes to participants who complete the census on site. Participants can also enter to win a Yeti 65 cooler, a $350 value.
It’s simple, safe and fun – residents drive up, receive a ticket and are then routed to a tent station to complete the census on their phone or with the assistance of Census Bureau staff. Participants can tune their radio to a specified FM radio station to listen to music and entertainment as they move through the contact-free process. Upon completion, they pick up their gifts and register for a grand prize drawing for the Yeti 65 cooler.
Census Bureau staff can help anyone who needs assistance completing their census form. Residents are encouraged to bring their census packets or invitation letters, if they received them, so that their PIN code can be used. Participants do not need to provide Social Security numbers. The census is a once every ten year effort to record all individuals, irrespective of citizenship, where they were living on April 1, 2020.
The census is not political. A complete count of everyone living in the county is essential to maintain vital services. Census data forms the basis for federal funding for over 325 public programs over the next 10 years – that’s money for schools, hospitals and clinics, fire and emergency services, senior programs, roads and much more.
When residents aren’t counted, both the county and the city of Española lose thousands of dollars that support public facilities and services – for seniors, children, veterans, and the disabled, among many others. Each person that’s counted brings in $5,750 annually according to County estimates. Over the ten years the census data is used that’s a total of $57,750 in funds for the community for each person counted.

The County Parks are still closed due to the current health concerns. As many of you know the COVID-19 has caused these closures. The County’s Parks & Recreation Department along with County Management made the difficult decision to close the parks and keep them closed to avoid spread of the virus, and for the safety of our residents. We are working diligently around the clock to began an opening process, however recently we have discovered that some individuals are destroying the gates and cutting locks to gain access into the parks, as well as leaving dirty diapers and other trash in the parking lots. Below are some pictures of the recent vandalism at the San Pedro Park. We ask the public to please be patient with us as we finalize the plans for re-opening, and we ask that you please respect the current closed status. We will be sure to inform the public as soon as the plan is finalized and the parks begin to open. Thank you!
