We would like to congratulate our Fiesta Corporation Treasurer, Ms. Christine “Teeney” Bustos from San Pedro, for her appointment by Governor Michelle Luján-Grisham to the vacancy on the Rio Arriba Board of County Commissioners. Bustos becomes only the second woman to ever serve as a county commissioner. There has not been a female county commissioner in over 30 years - 1990. Bustos has been a longtime community advocate and volunteer with the Fiesta Corporation, the Downtown Action Team, Santa Cruz de la Cañada Parish, and various entities!

53% oppose removing Oñate statues in NM

Interesting article...please remember that Española’s mayor & city council tried to end the Fiesta del Valle in 2018 because of its historical connection to Don Juan de Oñate. And the Rio Arriba County Commission has not taken any action on the future of the Oñate statute in Alcalde.

Pollster notes that survey didn't gauge 'strong feelings' on issue

Throwback Thursday to the 1948 Oñate Fiesta! It’s always a treat to find precious historical artifacts such as this. The history of the tradition of our community fiesta runs so deep!

Be proud of your traditions, Española! It is unfortunate people have tried to destroy them in recent time.

Our community has and can continue to remain unified when we resist efforts by outsiders to incite hate and fear amongst each other. We are United by our faith in God always and this Valley is proud of the unity it has carried throughout the years.

FIESTA DEL VALLE DE ESPANOLA CORP. CANCELS 2020 FIESTA

Please review the attached press release from the Fiesta Corporation in regards to the 2020 Fiesta del Valle. We apologize for any inconvenience or heartache this may cause. But we are sure you will understand due to the circumstances affecting our world.

We hope you can be involved and engaged for the 2021 Fiesta del Valle - which we plan to be just as great with the support of the community!

Don Juan de Oñate came to the Española Valley in July 1598 with many of the families that continue to reside in our community today. Our families lived amongst our Pueblo neighbors then and continue to do so today. Our history is dotted with many facets; some we may not understand with our 21st century perspectives. It is important that our community is united in face of a divisive world led by outside interest groups that try to incite hate and fear amongst peoples who have lived together for hundreds of years.

In 2018, when the City of Española’s Mayor and members of the City Council led an effort to disband the Fiesta del Valle; our community came together to raise an astounding amount of money and continued a tradition that will continue to move forward. We ask that our community remains united in face of outside influences that try to create division in our community.

It is extremely imperative that you follow the Executive Order of Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham. The virus will continue to spread in our communities unless it is completely necessary to be out.

Today I am announcing that effective tomorrow at 8 AM, New Mexico will be under a statewide stay-at-home instruction. All New Mexicans are instructed to stay at home except for outings essential to health, safety, and welfare.

It is urgently important that New Mexicans understand: You must stay home. Don’t panic – but it's no time for business as usual. This is life-and-death, and the most important thing the average New Mexican can do to help, right now, is stay at home. All businesses except those deemed essential to public health, safety and well-being will be ordered closed. Our society must continue to operate – but in an extremely limited way. This is the only way to slow the spread of COVID-19. More information here: https://bit.ly/2QHgSwD

Essential services include health care services, grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, utilities, child care for essential workers, banks & credit unions, shelters, emergency services, & infrastructure operations. See the full list of essential services and find more information here: https://bit.ly/39cCwPN

The Fiesta Corporation sends its deepest condolences on the passing of one of its founding members, David R. Salazar. Salazar was the first person to serve as vice-president of the Oñate Fiesta Council beginning in 1969. He continued to serve in various Fiesta roles for nearly a decade helping shape the event into what it has become today. Salazar was very proud of his tradition and heritage by serving the Fiesta Council alongside his siblings Johnny Block and Consuelo Thompson. He was a consistent attendee at our fundraising events this past year always supporting the Fiesta. We thank you for your dedication and especially for your support of the revival of the new Fiesta Corporation.

Keith Megill

The Fiesta Corporation sends it’s deepest condolences to the Megill Family on the passing of Keith Megill. Mr. Megill was the longtime director of EVCA (Española Valley Community Activities Association). When he wasn’t busy participating in other community activities, he helped organize the Oñate Fiesta youth activities for many years which included the watermelon/pie eating contests, the sack races and the memorable events that made Children’s Day the great celebration it was for Saturday of Fiesta weekend! Thank you Mr. Megill for the legacy left behind!

Harold Keith Megill was well-known throughout the Española Valley for over 30 years, following his arrival from Kansas in the early 1960s. Some people knew him as Santa Claus, others

Crafting community connections through art

The Fiesta Corporation would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Gabriela Silva, Executive Director of the Northern New Mexico Regional Art Center for her nomination as “Santa Fe New Mexican’s Ten Who Made a Difference.” Silva was instrumental with assisting our Fiesta Youth Committee this past summer with hosting youth activities on the Plaza for Fiesta Weekend and helping orchestrate the donation of countless bikes that were awarded to dozens of young Fiesta attendees!

Inside the education room of the Northern New Mexico Regional Art Center in Española, Gabriela Silva zigzags from one child to another as the group makes Christmas crafts.
