Last weekend's feedback was clear — people need advance notice and word-of-mouth works. So, show up on 6/27 with your signs and flags and help spread the word before then.

June 14, 2026 - Flag Day

I usually ask before photographing people for the HDC page — it's a good chance to hear what's on their minds. Here's my takeaway from today's Courthouse protest:

The turnout was surprisingly strong given the short notice. Many people said they heard about it through word of mouth rather than established channels. I see this as a sign of a healthy civic infrastructure — one that works both from the ground up and from the top down.

I think the largest and best-organized protests will continue to involve national groups like 50501, No Kings, and Indivisible, along with their local chapters. These organizations bring resources, experience, and a broad reach. But there appears to be an appetite in Humboldt for large-scale events organized by unaffiliated local individuals and smaller groups. Today's event grew out of an online discussion in the NextDoor No Kings group.

If that's the direction things are heading, it would make sense for local groups to come together and develop a shared set of guidelines for holding safe and effective protests — and to make those guidelines widely available.

Today's event went smoothly, but earlier courthouse protests have seen some alarming incidents, and having on-site leadership and safety marshals made a real difference. With the next presidential election more than two years away, there will be plenty of protests ahead — and plenty of opportunities to learn what works. Let's harness that knowledge.

The ballot initiative has been submitted. Next, we need to collect 4,874 voter signatures to get it on the November ballot. Indivisible Trinidad and other Humboldt Indivisible groups will be spearheading the signature collection upon approval from the Humboldt County Attorney. Information on how to volunteer as a signature collector will be released soon.

June 14th is Flag Day -- and also the 80th birthday of DJT. Donald has planned a day of celebration (of himself!) that is being countered by a National Day of Protest across the country. The NO KINGS coalition will hold nationwide demonstrations focused on defending our First Amendment freedoms and democracy.

This weekend in Humboldt:

Saturday, June 13th - Trinidad.
Indivisible Trinidad invites you to join their weekly protest from 12:00 to 2:00 pm on Main Street, between Windan Sea and the Chevron station. Bring your upside down flags, your NO KINGS signage and First Amendment posters, your noise-makers, and your patriotic spirit.

Saturday, June 13th - Arcata.
Join Mobilize Arcata for their weekly Plaza Protest at noon! Look for their signs and flags in front of Jacoby's Storehouse on the corner of H & 8th Streets. No protest sign? Just ask them for a loaner.

Sunday, June 14th - Eureka Courthouse.
Members of the Nextdoor No Kings group plan to gather in protest at the Eureka Courthouse from noon to 2:00 pm on Sunday. This is an unofficial event, so they're counting on participants to take personal responsibility for keeping things safe and secure.

NOTE: reports circulating about a march from Madaket Plaza to the Eureka Courthouse on Sunday are likely in error. None of the local protest organizers I'm in contact with are claiming it. I suspect someone did a Google search for protests on 6/14, and the 2025 Madaket Plaza march popped up (it was on 6/14/2025.)

Sunday, June 14th, 4:30 pm
The national NO KINGS coalition has planned their own event, RISE UP, SING OUT, on Sunday. This 90-minute concert features several big name performers and is also focused on a celebration of the First Amendment rights. The event will be streamed so that individuals and/or watch parties across the country may sing along, build community, and find inspiration in the performances. Sunday, June 14th - Ferndale
Join the Ferndale Fights Fascism weekly protest from noon to 2:00 pm at Ferndale City Hall near the gazebo, organized by Ferndale Indivisible.

SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, June 27th
50501 is organizing nationwide protests on Saturday, 6/27/26. 50501 Humboldt will hold another big protest at the Eureka Courthouse that day. Details to come.

Update on the Amazon warehouse: As you know, Amazon is currently proposing a 40,290-square foot "last mile" delivery warehouse in the Airport Business Park in McKinleyville. The facility is currently in the permitting and environmental impact stage. At a meeting earlier this month, there were significant (and loud) protests against this.

A ballot referendum is now under consideration to give the public a say in the matter. Remember, voters defeated a Walmart project on the Eureka waterfront through such a ballot measure. One of our local Indivisible groups is gathering information to determine whether or not the ballot deadline can be met. Based on the attendance and pushback from residents at the May meeting, they believe there's sufficient public support to make the referendum a success.
