Ken and I are on a long journey, so we learn something new every single day.
For example, this recent surrender that came to us through the FWC Amnesty Program.
'Timmy' was listed as a "Common African Mud Turtle", and we happily accepted it into our educational program to steward for the rest of its life.
Placing the turtle in the proper enclosure is vital, and African Mud's can be a bit tricky to identify.
There are 17 described species of African mud turtles in the genus Pelusios within the family Pelomedusidae, and we house a couple of types of them.
To further complicate things, the genus Pelomedusa is also in the family Pelomedusidae, which comprises 10 scientifically recognized species. While this genus is known as "African Helmeted Turtles", they are often listed as "Common African Mud Turtles".
And on top of all that, these are new classifications. Ken and I got our first "African Mud Turtles" back when there were only three known species. THREE! Please click through as I walk through how I determined the type of turtle this recent surrender...
