Speakers at budget hearing rap spending, praise Participatory Budgeting

Each speaker praised the pilot for how it engaged them: several Evanston Township High School (ETHS) students said it empowered them and other local teens. Northwestern University graduate student Rishabh Juneja said it connected him to the broader Evanston community off of campus, and Kayleigh Kavanagh said it’s been “the best experience I’ve had in Evanston” since moving to the city around a year ago.

“I vote in elections, but I never felt like I had this type of influence,” Kavanagh said. “I want to raise my kid in a place where the residents have a say in how the money is spent.”

Evanston City Council Members heard opposition to tax and rate hikes, calls for reduced expenses and wide support for continuing participatory budgeting
