Great seeing a familiar face today! Was Horton your educator while at ETHS?

Great to have Bob Horton, retired chem/phys teacher on campus today. For Staff Appreciation Week 2023, Keith Ammann '87 made a gift to the ETHS Foundation in his honor. Today, Mr. Horton came in to pick up his ETHS spirit gift and check out some of the new learning spaces since his retirement in 1998.

“It’s a bittersweet weekend to be a Wildkit,
We will all dearly miss Darryl, the heart of a great ETHS family, while we celebrate Sebastian’s remarkable accomplishment.” (Rick Kolsky, Foundation President)

Darryl Cheeks ‘86 exemplified the Wildkit spirit. In the 2-1/2years he sat on the ETHS Foundation Board, he was effusive in proclaiming his pride and love for our school as an alum and current parent. He was devoted to our mission and provided advice and insights to help guide our growth. He also encouraged his son Sebastian to be a student spokesperson and participate in raising awareness about the ETHS Foundation and paying it forward.

When I first met Darryl in May 2018, we toured every corner of the school and compared his ETHS experience to that of the current students. He was awed by improvements at ETHS since his graduation, eager and energized to get involved. Shortly after being selected to serve as a Board member in the spring of 2019, Darryl faced a major health challenge. During his recovery, he never wavered in his desire to be an active Board member. His attendance at our remote and in-person Board meetings always reminded us of the deep, unique pride that our alumni have in ETHS. Personally, I felt enriched by his gregarious, magnetic presence in the short time I knew him.

Darryl’s legacy will live on through his children and his passionate commitment to make our school and community a better place.

Please join me in extending our deepest sympathy to his wife Rebecca Shuford Cheeks ‘86, his family and friends who cherished him dearly. - Joanne Bertsche, Executive Director
