The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive SEL-focused bullying prevention program that improves school climate and increases student engagement.

The Prospect Park School District kicked off this year’s Great Kindness Challenge on January 22nd with fundraising efforts continuing throughout the month of March.

This year’s service project was entitled “Kind Coins for Kenyan Kids” with funds being raised to help students attending the Kids for Peace School in Kenya.

This year we raised a total of $3,204 which will provide the cost for half of tuition, a school uniform, and school breakfast and lunch for 64 Kenyan children. This is amazing!!!!

Classes at School 1 celebrated their efforts by dressing in an assigned color and uniting together to take 2 group pictures (one with grades Prek-2nd and the other with grades 3-6) in the form of a colorful heart to represent the four pillars which were:
1. Care for self, others and community
2. Gratitude
3. Respect
4. Inclusiveness

I am part of the entire team so I wore a rainbow dress to support every team color.

This is our second year participating with this challenge and I encourage everyone to join the effort next year.

Thank you to all those who have purchased so far. We have 3 more days left and 50% goes to this effort. Please support!

Today, we were able to witness history!!!

Let me give you the backdrop…picture it, November 14, 2022, in the Prospect Park School 1 gymnasium. My entire school community participated in the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. During the assembly, I said to my students, “Maybe one day, Ruby Bridges can come to our school in person.”

Fast forward to November 6, 2023, when THEE iconic Ruby Bridges came to my school district by way of AAA Northeast with my sister-friend Roz Thompson. What a moment that was!

BUT TODAY…we were in attendance when the unanimous bipartisan vote of 77-0 passed for November 14th to be designated as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day in the State of New Jersey. What a proud day it is!

A special thank you to Office of Assemblywoman Shavonda E. Sumter Shavonda E. Sumter and Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly for helping to make history once again. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

The Prospect Park School District displayed various acts of kindness with their participation in The Great Kindness Challenge - a proactive and positive SEL-focused bullying prevention program that takes place the last week in January.

Each school facilitated age-appropriate activities and encouraged respectful and kind behaviors through action.

Today, School Number One culminated the challenge with a visit from Omega Man, while the Middle School had the pleasure of hearing from Entrepreneur - Philanthropist- Author - Filmmaker, William Michael Barbee.

We hope and pray that our school community displays acts of kindness to all not just throughout the school year but for the rest of their lives.

Kudos to everyone who helped to make this challenge a huge success. The fundraiser portion will continue through the end of March so stay tuned for more details.

The Prospect Park School District has chosen to take part in The Great Kindness Challenge for the second year in a row. This year, we are participating in the fundraiser, Kind Coins for Kenyan Kids, a global service project to help provide education to 250 children in the Kids for Peace School of Kenya, located in Mikei, a remote village in Kenya.

To assist with this effort, we are inviting our school community to pay $1 to wear jeans on Wednesdays (school uniform shirts are a must) and a $1 to wear crocs on Fridays (must be worn in sports mode with school uniforms).

Read the newsletter for more details.
