ACCS partners with Department of Defense, Auburn University for manufacturing challenge
——-
The prototype for a Department of Defense national manufacturing competition was put into action Friday, April 26, in Auburn with students from four of Alabama’s community colleges.

Teams of four students each in machining and welding programs at Wallace State, Southern Union, Calhoun and Central Alabama community colleges are competing in the two-day challenge for prizes and an opportunity to compete in the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago in September 2020.

The goal of Project MFG is to address the critical shortage of skilled workers in manufacturing nationwide. Unless the manufacturing industry is able to attract workers to the field to replace the 2.7 million manufacturing professionals preparing to retire, American companies are expected to be short 2.4 million skilled workers over the next 10 years.

“Community colleges are the major pipeline of where we recruit and retain from for workers to go into skilled industries, so it’s just a natural partnership with the Alabama Community College System,” said Adele Ratcliff, Director of the Department of Defense’s Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment Program.

“This competition catalyzes the community to come together and gain a faster velocity of people to get into the trades because we need them today and tomorrow. A strong, vibrant industrial base creates the economic engine that any country needs to lean on to move forward in a global world.”

Awesome!

Awesome!

We (students in class) kicked around in class, how we could show off our credentials to visitors. Finding enough real estate posed a problem in our class room and we would have to build a wall if we placed them on the shop floor. Couple of the students suggested why not place them in the hall leading into the classroom... Great suggestion!!! I have the AM class on the right and the PM class on the left. I hope to see the walls covered before end of school year. National Institute for Metalworking Skills Kathy Newman Looman Haas Factory Outlet, a Division of Timco Haas Automation, Inc.
