Juneteenth — also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, second Independence Day, and Emancipation Day — has been celebrated by the African American community since the 1800s, marking the anniversary of the arrival of Union General Gordon Granger to Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, bringing news of emancipation — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people from bo***ge.

In June 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation making a federal holiday — and each year, it is recognized as a time to celebrate the journey of Black Americans from enslavement to full citizenship, through Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, the Civil Rights movement, and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Tonight, Councilmember Jon Stehle (on behalf of Mayor Catherine Read) declared June 19, 2023, as Juneteenth in the City of Fairfax. Receiving the proclamation were representatives of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Fairfax.

The city invites everyone to join the city and Mount Calvary Baptist Church at our inaugural Juneteenth celebration on June 17, 2023. Find out more about the Juneteenth celebration at fairfaxva.gov/Juneteenth.

The exhibit “A Material World : Photographs of the 1980s” is not all leg warmers and big hair. It also illustrates the news stories that impacted Virginia and the nation, like the election of Governor Douglass Wilder in 1989 - the first African American elected governor in the U.S. ( Come see the exhibit open now through May 7) City of Fairfax GovernmentHistoric Fairfax City, Inc.
