Should non-U.S. citizens respond to the 2020 Census?

Yes. Everyone living in the United States and its five territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) is required by law to be counted in the census—whether they are citizens or not.

Citizens of foreign countries who are living in the United States during the 2020 Census, including members of the diplomatic community, should be counted at the U.S. residence where they live and sleep most of time. If they are not sure about where they usually live, count them where they are staying on April 1, 2020.

Citizens of foreign countries who are temporarily visiting the United States on vacation or business on April 1, 2020, should not be counted.

If you are a college student, your circumstances will determine where you are counted in the 2020 Census:

Students who are living at home should be counted at their home address.

College students who live away from home should be counted at the on- or off-campus residence where they live and sleep most of the time, even if they are at home on April 1, 2020. If they live in housing designed for college students (such as dorms and apartments with “by-the-bed” leases), they will be counted as part of the Group Quarters Operation. If they live off campus in housing that is not designed for college students (such as a private house or apartment), they should count themselves at that address.

College students who are living or studying abroad outside the United States on April 1, 2020, are not counted in the census.

Foreign students living and attending school in the United States should be counted at the on- or off-campus residence where they live and sleep most of the time.

A message from the Census:

The 2020 Census is underway and the most important thing you can do is respond online, by phone, or by mail when you receive your invitation. Responding now will minimize the need for the Census Bureau to send census takers out into communities to follow up. Please check this page for regular updates.

Mason LGBTQ Resources

Updates for 03/16/2020:

Dear students, colleagues, and friends,

In light of the guidance from the university and to prioritize the safety and well-being of our community, we have decided to cancel upcoming events, including Pride Week. We are working on the feasibility of temporarily offering Safe Zone via WebEx.

We are still available to you as a resource in this uncertain time. While we are observing social distancing, a staff member will be available in the LGBTQ+ Resources suite during business hours and our whole team will be available via email and WebEx as needed.

Please reach out if you need anything. Let’s keep the most marginalized in our communities in mind as we opt out of social gatherings, support local businesses and people at a distance, and get through this time of anxiety.

With love,
The LGBTQ+ Resources team

Join us for the first ever Mason Leadership Summit: Innovative Leadership for Adult Learners and Student Parents!! For more info and to register, visit: https://lead.gmu.edu/summit/
The LEAD Office and Contemporary Student Services are pleased to host this year's Mason Leadership Summit at George Mason University, specifically designed for Mason students who identify as adult learners (25 years old and up) and students who identify as parents (any age). Participants will learn practical ways to further develop as leaders in multiple contexts (career, family, community, etc.), whether they have a formal leadership position or not. The summit will focus on personal and professional leadership skill development through both large and small group experiences. Students will broaden their perspectives on leadership and engage with other adult learners and student parents through practical and applied leadership skill development.
