July vs. December: When is Fairfax County on Worst Behavior?

We analyzed 1,738 Fairfax County arrests in August and July:

6.5% were for DWI or were DWI-related.

6.7% were for reckless driving.

*Then, we analyzed 809 Fairfax County arrests in December*

13% were for DWI or were DWI-related.

5% were for reckless driving.

CONCLUSION: Fairfax County is on its' worst behavior in December.

ANALYSIS: College students are home. Office parties are the norm. It makes sense reckless driving is down slightly when DWI is up, because sometimes officers arrest a person for DWI who they initially stopped for what would have been reckless driving.

In Virginia, new "texting and driving" fines and enforcement measures are set to take effect July 1st. Keep in mind that the police gain the ability to initiate a traffic stop if they suspect a driver is texting and driving. In contrast, today the police do not have such an ability (legally). Interestingly, using a phone's GPS function while driving will still not be prohibited.
