On Sunday, February 5, at 1:38 a.m., units were dispatched for a reported apartment fire in the 7400 block of Little River Turnpike, in the Annandale area of Fairfax County.
Units arrived on the scene of a three-story, garden-style apartment building with fire visible on the third floor, extending into the attic. A second alarm was immediately requested. Crews quickly went to work extinguishing the fire. FCFRD personnel assisted in the evacuation of two occupants from apartments not directly on fire.
Based on the extent of the fire, potential life safety issues, and freezing temperatures, a third alarm was requested. This brought additional units from the Alexandria Firefighters, Inc. IAFF Local 2141. The fire was extinguished shortly after. Two residents were transported to the hospital for a check-up. There were no reported firefighter injuries.
Three occupants were home at the time of the fire. Working smoke alarms alerted the occupants to the fire. Upon investigation, they discovered smoke and fire. All occupants quickly self-evacuated prior to fire department arrival. Other building occupants called 9-1-1.
Fire Investigators determined the fire was accidental in nature and started in the living room of the apartment. The cause of the fire was an electrical event with a multiplug wall adapter.
Approximately 22 people have been displaced from the building because of the fire. The Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management and Security were on-scene, working with the Red Cross, to find alternative housing options for the displaced occupants. Damages as a result of the fire were approximately $80,420.00.
We would like to remind all residents that overloading power strips, and power taps, can have potential fire safety effects on the electrical circuit. It can often lead to overheating the circuit, which can result in fires. All surge protectors or power strips need to be listed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. Visually inspect all surge prot

Thank YOU Fairfax!!!
Yesterday we urged the Board of Supervisors to stop playing politics with fire fighter retirement- for both current and new employees. Research shows that paying employees two different rates for the same job creates a resentful work environment and creates very high turnover rates for the new employees.
We believe everyone should receive a decent and dignified retirement after serving for 25 years. Tell us what you think in the comments below. - And please take a moment to share this video.
