GMU's Dept. of Information Sciences and Technology The Department is part of the Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University. The department offers a BS in Information Technology, a MS in Applied Information Technology, and participates in the school-wide PhD in Information Technology.

The Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) provides the premier graduate and undergraduate applied information technology education focused on and responsive to the unique technology, management, leadership and innovation needs of government, government-related, and corporate employers.

Mission: At IST our vision is to expand human capabilities for social good through the application of information sciences and information technology. To accomplish our mission we engage and educate the best and brightest; conduct leading‐edge research that integrates people, information and technology; and, contribute our expertise, both human and technical, to address global problems and challenges.

For students that are undeclared or declared in another major, but working towards declaring the IT major: No major changes will be considered or processed until after spring 2017 grades have been posted. If you are deemed eligible after your grades are posted, please contact an IST Academic Advisor (Ms. Genova, Mrs. Howe, or Mrs. Sevilla) to declare the major.

Dr. Mihai Boicu is co-author of a recently published book by Cambridge University Press: G. Tecuci, D. Marcu, M. Boicu, D. A. Schum, Knowledge Engineering: Building Cognitive Assistants for Evidence-based Reasoning, Cambridge University Press
The book presents a significant advancement in the theory and practice of knowledge engineering, the discipline concerned with the development of intelligent agents that use knowledge and reasoning to perform problem solving and decision-making tasks. It also includes a powerful learning agent shell, Disciple-EBR, enabling students, practitioners, and researchers to develop cognitive assistants rapidly in a wide variety of domains that require evidence-based reasoning, including intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, law, forensics, medicine, and education.
