Welcome to the VIU School of Public & International Affairs The increase in globalization in recent decades serves as a constant reminder that today, more than ever, we transcend geographical distances to communicate and collaborate with state and non-state actors all over the world. With the recent advances in technology, we accomplish more things faster than ever before. Virginia International University’s School of Public & International Affairs prepares students to deal with the ever-increasing interdependency of economies, as well as providing a strong basis for continued collaboration among the various actors within this community. Virginia International University’s location just outside of Washington, DC provides students with unique opportunities for internships and job placement upon completion of their degree. Students enrolled in VIU’s MPA and MIR Programs are prepared to hold leadership positions in a variety of fields including, government, non-profit, public agencies, and the private sector. The School of Public & International Affairs at VIU stands up to the challenge of offering relevant degrees in the classroom and online , that equip the students with vital skills to support the fast paced global climate across various domains. We provide our students with an affordable and practical education, covering cutting-edge technological innovations to ensure our graduates’ success when they enter the workforce. Our courses are taught by accomplished practicing professionals in the field, who work in state, local, and federal government agencies as well as the private sector within the DC Metropolitan area. Our class sizes are small, our student body diverse, and our expert instructors use a hands-on teaching approach and encourage the exchange of experiences and new ideas. Our programs are available both on campus in Fairfax, VA and online . The VIU School of Public & International Affairs offers the following programs: Master of Public Administration (MPA) Master of Science in International Relation Students enrolled in VIU’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) and Master of Science in International Relations (MIR) programs receive strong grounding in the discipline and the professional skills to pursue successful careers in government, non-profit, public agencies, and the private sectors. SPIA courses are taught by accomplished academics and practicing professionals. SPIA MIR student Eveline Rodrigues de Carvalho is doing an internship with the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Foundation in Fairfax. The foundation is raising $2 million dollars to build a Suffragist Memorial at Occoquan Regional Park, Fairfax County, Virginia, part of the historic prison grounds where the infamous Occoquan Workhouse was located. On Sunday, September 30, 2018, Virginia International University (VIU) hosted a Candidate Forum sponsored by the Multicultural Chambers Alliance comprised of the Asian American Chamber of Commerce, Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce, and the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The event provided VA senatorial and congressional district representatives a bi-partisan platform to present their political positions in light of the upcoming November elections.

The candidate forum was moderated by Kathryn Falk, Vice President and Market Leader for Northern Virginia Operations at Cox Communications. Dr.Ron Kovach, VIU Vice President for Academic Affairs gave a general welcome on behalf of the University before giving the floor to Republican candidates, Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (10th congressional district), Mr. Jeff Dove (11th congressional district), Mr. Thomas Oh (8th congressional district) and Mr. Corey Stewart (Senatorial candidate).

After a brief networking break, Democratic candidates took the floor for the second half of the event after a brief welcome by VIU President Dr. Isa Sarac. The Democratic candidates team included Senator Tim Kaine, Ms. Jennifer Wexton (10th congressional district) and Congressman Gerry Connolly (11th congressional district). Libertarian Mr. Stevan Porter (11th congressional district) closed the event with a presentation on behalf of fellow Libertarian Mr. Matt Waters (senatorial candidate).

The event provided a diverse civic forum for members of the VIU and broader VA community to mingle and network with each other as well as with political candidates involved in the upcoming midterm elections. Be sure to vote!

Duties and Responsibilities. Primary responsibilities include:
1. Work as part of Fair Elections Center team to develop and expand the number of bilingual, technologically savvy poll workers working on Election Day;
2. Research policies and practices relevant to recruitment and employment of poll workers across all counties in target states to develop and expand information on WorkElections.com, an innovative online tool used to promote and improve access to poll-working;
3. Conduct outreach, including over the phone, to numerous local election officials to collect information necessary for the operation and development of WorkElections.com;
4. Provide research to support written communications and related material geared to engaging the interest of businesses and other organizations around encouraging employees and constituents to serve as poll workers;
5. Input information into technological platforms necessary for website functionality.

Intelligence and Statecraft: Responding to National Security Threats

Eligibility to Participate:
This program is open to anyone from the age of 21 to 35 who is currently a graduate student or has two years of work experience in a related field. The group will convene on a monthly to bi-monthly basis for evening discussions, and all prospective participants must be committed to making every effort to attend all of the meetings (to be held in downtown D.C.).

Jamestown’s Young Professionals Program is a year-long (September to May) lecture series that provides young professionals interested in international security with the opportunity to engage with current and former top U.S. policy makers, diplomats and Jamestown analysts. Each series will be dedicated to a particular region or issue that is important to U.S. strategic interests, giving participants the chance to gain the insight of subject matter experts and seasoned practitioners while also connecting with peers.

The Women & Politics Institute at American University is offering a WeLead training program for women interested in running for office or working for political campaigns.In order to qualify participants must be between 21 and 30 years of age and must be available to attend six Saturday training (from 10 AM – 3 PM) scheduled over the course of the year.
