All views and posts are my own and do not represent the views of Fairfax County or their respective Commissions I’m Alyssa Batchelor-Causey, your Fairfax County Planning Commissioner representing the Dranesville District and the Chair of the Fairfax County Com

mission for Women. I created this page to share updates, resources, and insights that help residents understand what’s happening in our community — from land use and planning issues to initiatives focused on the wellbeing, safety, and economic empowerment of women and girls in Fairfax County. Here, you’ll find things like:

- Highlights from Planning Commission and Commission for Women work

I’m committed to building a Fairfax County where everyone feels informed, valued, and connected. However, before we get started, please note that this is a personally run page and the views expressed here are my own. Nothing on this page represents the official positions of Fairfax County, the Fairfax County Planning Commission, or the Fairfax County Commission for Women. I am furious.

This is a tragedy, but it is not shocking. It is what happens when serious allegations of violence against women are not taken seriously enough, when patterns of harm are minimized, and when systems fail to act before that harm escalates. This was preventable.

Women are not responsible for the violence committed against them. And yet, time and again, men externalize their failures, their anger, and their sense of loss onto women, with devastating consequences.

A woman is dead. Children have lost their mother. A family and a community are left to carry the weight of this violence.

Just yesterday, I testified before the Fairfax County Government Board of Supervisors on the urgent need to invest in women’s safety and security. This is exactly why. Funding for prevention, intervention, and survivor support is not optional, it is the difference between life and death.

As Chair of the Commission for Women, I will continue to push for the resources, policies, and accountability measures needed to stop this pattern of violence.

Believe women. Protect women.

I am beyond thrilled to share that the Dranesville District will be getting ~400 new units of multifamily and townhome housing.

This project is a huge step toward developing the rest of the Innovation South, as well as working toward reaching the County’s affordable housing goals.

One of the things I pushed for during this process is smaller, more affordable ‘starter’ townhomes to add in a wider diversity of housing to the area and to give younger Fairfax County residents a chance to buy a home and put down roots.

I’m happy to say that this project passed both the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors unanimously.

**Repost**

Last month, the Fairfax County community lost a true pillar of service and a fierce advocate for women and girls. This weekend, we remembered and celebrated the life of Mattie Palmore, a longtime Commissioner on the Fairfax County Commission for Women, whose dedication stretched farther than I can remember and whose impact will extend far beyond her years with us.

Mattie devoted her life to community, justice, and care. She was a constant source of warmth, wisdom, and light – someone whose presence made you feel both supported and inspired. Even as she faced significant health challenges, she never stopped showing up for others. Her commitment to helping women escape domestic violence was unwavering, and she brought extraordinary compassion and strength to this work.

We are better because Mattie walked among us. Her legacy lives on in every life she touched, in every woman she fought for, and in the community she helped build.

May her memory be a blessing and may we honor her by continuing the work she poured her heart into. 💜
