Dr. Avstreih, Office of the Medical Director, recognized Firefighter Katie Auer, Station 13, Dunn Loring, A-Shift Tuesday for her calm, excellent care of an infant having an airway emergency. She quickly set up the pediatric airway equipment for Firefighter/Paramedic Bachmann. Firefighter Auer inspected the baby’s mouth and visualized “something shinny” and pulled out a thumbnail sized sticker. Baby then produced a very strong cry and his color improved. She also did an excellent job reassuring the parents. Great job! #FCFRD

Earlier this week, this beautiful young lady and her family stopped by Station 13, Dunn Loring, B-Shift to give the crew a little #FillTheBoot pep talk. This brave young lady was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at age two. She let the crew know she attended the MDA camp last year and had a blast. One of the many reasons we collect for #MDA.

Please share this urgent request. Likes are great, but sharing is better especially with the below story. Thank you Connie Piening was diagnosed with lupus in 2007 which led to her diagnosis of chronic kidney disease in September of 2017. This debilitating condition is making her daily activities very difficult. Connie is 72 years old, a wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. In 2012, Connie lost her mother and since then she has been helping her one brother take care of their other handicapped brother which is a full time job. In October of 2019, Connie’s husband had a stroke which added additional stress. Connie has been on dialysis for 3 years and does dialysis every night for 12 hours, BUT it’s not a lifesaver she needs a transplant. This disease is slowly taking away the wonderful times with her family. Her doctors and kidney team are telling her that she desperately needs a transplant for quality of life. She is very much needed at home to take care of her loved ones. The wait list for a deceased donor is long, and Connie needs a kidney donor to save her life. That is why I humbly ask that you please help me get her story out by SHARING and encouraging others to share Connie’s story as well. Connie needs blood type 0 and is listed at Christ Hospital, Auburn Avenue, Cincinnati, OH. Please call Paula Frankhauser, Transplant Coordinator, at 513-585-1427 and tell her you’d like to fill out the referral form to donate a kidney to Connie Piening. Your support is greatly appreciated.
The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 left 343 New York firefighters dead. Retired FDNY Lieutenant James J. O’Donnell survived that horrific day but attended over 150 memorial services for those that passed. Now, he shares the lives of 10 heroes who perished in the attacks, as told by their parents in “Sons of Valor, Parents of Faith.” “The crashing of two planes into the Twin Towers not only dismantled the buildings but hundreds of families as well. Mothers and fathers were left in the rubble of these attacks, searching for husbands, brothers and sons. Some of them never received answers nor recovered the bodies,” O’Donnell said. “The parents’ spiritual and emotional journeys can serve as an example of faith rising over despair.” “Sons of Valor, Parents of Faith” serves as a memorial to the lives and careers of 10 first responders who perished on 9/11. O’Donnell presents a unique and personal look at how the parents of these heroes were consoled by the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the role that they played in helping them manage their grief in the aftermath of a national tragedy. In their own words, these faithful families share their sons' bravery and sacrifice so that it will never be forgotten. These parents not only recount the lives of their children but their own road to healing. O’Donnell takes a special look at the role faith played in the lives of those that perished and their families. “Sons of Valor, Parents of Faith is meant to help readers understand the stress, hardship and sometimes devastation that parents and families of first responders face,” O’Donnell said. “I also hope that readers realize the efforts and sacrifices of the FDNY and their families. Not only on that day but in the ensuing months and years.” Available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Westbow Press.
