Let's talk about off-leash dogs.
Over the past few weeks, I've learned that there is a long history of concerns related to offâleash dogs at Spring Lake park. Concerns have been raised by neighboring property owners and other park users, that span over the years. These concerns involve safety, accessibility, stream erosion, and the overall use of the park being hindered. Some residents have also shared concerns about negative or confrontational interactions that have made the park feel less welcoming at times.
I understand why residents value having space where dogs can be off leash. When done safely and responsibly, it is a wonderful community amenity. I have a dog and love being able to enjoy offâleash parks, so I understand this personally. At the same time, Spring Lake Park is not an officially designated dog park, and informal offâleash use without following County guidelines raises real safety and liability concerns.
Because of this, and in light of recent events, the Town is actively evaluating the situation. We are looking at questions such as whether this location is appropriate for an official dog park, what it would cost to bring it into compliance, how offâleash use affects other park users and nearby neighbors, whether there are alternative uses for this park, and if there are other locations for an official dog park that would better serve the broader Perinton community.
My goal is a solution that is fair, safe, and reflective of the needs of the entire Perinton community. I will continue to share updates as things move forward. In the meantime, please be thoughtful of others, leash your dog, and engage on this topic respectfully.
