IAFF L-1314 Fall River Firefighters
A great example of why early detection is critical to firefighter health. We are proud to have partnered with National Diagnostic Services of NY to offer ultrasound screenings at our convention in October and look forward to future screening events. Listen to IAFF L-1314 Fall River Firefighters member Jason Burns tell his story how early detection likely saved his life.
It was a pleasure speaking with firefighters at the IAFF L-1314 Fall River Firefighters Candidates Night last evening.
Nothing is more insightful than hearing firsthand about the issues and concerns of our public safety officials.
Thank you for the opportunity.
Just curious, is Joshua Hetzler still union president?
Thank you brothers and sisters in MASSACHUSETTS with IAFF L-1314 Fall River Firefighters!
Mike was the third member of his engine to get lymphoma, and helped bring our early cancer detection education to FRFD EMS / IAFF L-1314 Fall River Firefighters. He was proactive about his health and went to the doctor when he noticed a lump on his jawline. Mike had an aggressive form of cancer and his quick action saved his life. He wants other firefighters to prioritize their health the same way he did:

3rd annual Dighton Fire Association โTouch-A-Truck Eventโ. This event will take place on Saturday September 14, 2019 at 0900 to 1500 (rain date Saturday September 21, 2019 0900-1500) on the property of Manheim New England located at 123 Williams Street North Dighton. The Touch-A-Truck event will be FREE admission to the public. It is every childโs dream to drive a fire truck, a police car, race car, a dump truck, front end loader, tractor or an excavator etc. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!!!!!!
This year we will be raising money for two local children that are near and dear to our hearts here at the Dighton Fire Department.
Finley was born on January 27, 2017 and is the son of Taunton Firefighter, Jon Silva, and his wife Emily. He was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) with Mitral Stenosis and Aortic Atresia. Finley's heart functions using only one ventricle. He has had the first 2 surgeries that are part of a series of 3 procedures to reroute heart function to one side of his heart. He is currently awaiting the third surgery, which is scheduled for later this fall.
Baby Paul was born on January 22, 2019 and was diagnosed with Critical Aortic Stenosis with Coarctation of the Aorta within minutes of birth. Paul is the son of Paul Gordon Jr. (brother of Taunton Firefighter, Roberto Gonzalez) and his wife Lauren. Paul's heart abnormalities narrow blood flow throughout the body and put pressure on his left ventricle. Paul has undergone several cardiac catheterizations and two open heart surgeries to date. He will require future surgeries to repair/replace valves in his heart as he grows. Paul is currently home recovering after spending much of the first five months of his life at Boston Children's Hospital.
Both babies require extensive medical care that requires their families to travel to Boston Children's for treatment. These hospital stays often result in unexpected costs to the families.
We are hoping this event will raise awareness for Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs). CHDs are the most common birth defects; occurring in about 1% of births in the U.S. About 25% of those affected will need surgical intervention, like Finley and Paul did, to survive. These babies demonstrate their unwavering strength and resilience as they face multiple surgeries and long recoveries. It is our hope that raising awareness will help these children live their lives to the fullest.
Donations can be made directly to the Silva and Gordon Families. People may also choose to donate directly to Boston Children's Hospital in the families' names. We will also be collecting donations on the day of the event.
Please share share share this event!!!!
This is what itโs all about. Great job by IAFF L-1314 Fall River Firefighters and President Burns
Subject: Local 1314 Executive Board Candidate Michael O'Reagan

Fall River, MA 02720
Dear Sirs,
I wish to share my recommendation of Michael O'Reagan in his effort to become an elected member of your Executive Board.
My history with Michael spans almost three years now. We became acquainted over the issue of cancer in the fire service.
In this short period, I have witnessed the unapologetic tenacity of a lion in this man. Although he may appear rough and politically incorrect at times, it would be a mistake and misjustice to assume he does not
research his issues thoroughly and thoughtfully.
In the issue of his Fall River fire station, he has fought tirelessly to bring awareness to media and politicians of the dangerous conditions first responders must work, train, eat, sleep in.
During his fight to bring awareness of cancer in the fire service, he has been an outspoken advocate for the issue of PFAS discovery in firefighter turnout gear. While a still confusing and uncomfortable discussion for many,
Michael has been a leader in openly sharing his knowledge with his peers.
Michael has been instrumental in his efforts while working with Massachusetts Attorney General Candidate Jay McMahon, seeking an investigation into the PFAS contamination of firefighter turnout gear. In addition, Michael was instrumental in ensuring Massachusetts State Representative Geoff Diehl was aware of the dangers of PFAS exposures to fire fighters by arranging phone conversations and sharing of data.
For these reasons and his courage to share his personal health issues as a cancer survivor, his serving as a Executive Board member would only benefit your membership.
Sincerely,
Diane Cotter
