Around 6am this morning, members from Engine 5, Ladder 2, Fall River Fire Dept. Rescue 1, Car 3 and the Dive Truck responded to the Henry St. Boat Ramp at Cook Pond for a vehicle in the water. A member donned his dive suit and SCUBA tank and went into the water on a tag line because this came in as a water rescue, with a person possibly trapped. Fortunately, there was nobody in the truck and it appeared to be abandoned. Members stayed on scene to help the tow company remove the vehicle and cleared in service for the next call.

This was the second water rescue call for Heavy Rescue 1 in the same shift. The previous night they were dispatched with Engine 2 and Car 2 to a 12 foot skiff that was overturned in the Taunton River with two men overboard. One of the men was able to swim safely to shore where PD could locate them and have EMS evaluate the man. The second man was hanging onto the overturned boat and Marine 1 (our boat that is crossmanned by Heavy Rescue 1) was able to rescue him and bring him to shore, where he was evaluated by EMS.

This is one of the reasons we are constantly advocating for appropriate staffing levels.

In order to successfully mitigate your emergency we have to be able to be on scene quickly and with enough firefighters to complete our tasks simultaneously in order to keep you safe and protect your property.

Every second matters.
