Statement from the MTA Board of Directors:
The Haverhill Education Association and the Malden Education Association have been undergoing months and months of contentious contract negotiations with their respective districts. Yesterday, the HEA and MEA overwhelmingly voted to strike on Monday if they cannot get fair agreements. The Massachusetts Teachers Association’s Board of Directors stands in solidarity with the HEA and MEA for fair contracts.
In Malden and Haverhill, our members are fighting for the common good. When school committees fail to settle fair contracts, they disrespect not only educators, but also the students and the communities that depend on our public schools. Malden and Haverhill are saying enough is enough. We applaud the courage of our locals and our members to act and speak out to achieve what their students, educators and communities deserve.
It is with great sadness that I share the news that former FREA president and longtime Durfee teacher, Joseph M. Quinn passed on October 2, 2022.
I didn't have the opportunity to meet Mr. Quinn personally but I have been contacted by several of his former colleagues who shared great stories about the type of teacher and unionist that he was. They remember him as a strong leader and good friend. His leadership during the 1978 FREA Strike was noted by all.
On behalf of the association I would like to extend our condolences to Mr. Quinn's family, friends, and former students.

A joint message from officials of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), ILO (International Labour Organisation) and Education International reads, “Today, on World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate the critical role of teachers in transforming learners’ potential by ensuring they have the tools they need to take responsibility for themselves, for others and for the planet. We call on countries to ensure that teachers are trusted and recognised as knowledge producers, reflective practitioners, and policy partners.”
World Teachers’ Day is celebrated to honour teachers for their accomplishments, efforts, and contribution to society as well as to the lives of their students.

Tonight our former students walked the stage to receive their diploma. At whatever grade you taught these students, you played a role in tonight's walk across that stage. Congratulations to all the educators, parents and of course the students🎓🎉
Wishing the class of 2022 all the best!
Great morning seeing the civics presentations our middle school students have been working on! They set out to address many issues with mental health being a common theme in each project and the focus of many. Big shout out to Mr. Blanchette and everyone else that made this event possible.

Brookline schools will be open Tuesday after the teachers’ union and school committee reached a deal overnight to end the teachers’ strike.
Brookline Educators are demanding:
1) Guaranteed duty free prep time daily
2) Guaranteed time for colleagues to collaborate weekly
3) Substantive action to recruit and retain people of color
The BEA is going on 3 years without a contract and their school committee has been unwilling to meet their demands
💐Happy Mother's Day 💐
Big shout-out to all the Durfee students that participated in the this year's poetry slam. Well done! Your teachers are proud👏👏👏

"Teaching is not a lost art but the regard for it is a lost tradition. Hence tomorrow's problem will not be to get teachers, but to recognize the good ones and not discourage them before they have done their stint." -Jacques Barzun

Too often teachers leave the profession for reasons that have nothing to do with students or teaching. Mrs. Sarah Anne Lewis' story tells us how far we've come in a relatively short time but also how long it takes to change even the most egregious practices. Today's world is not what it once was but we still have a lot to fight for.
Sarah Anna Lewis was the first Black person to earn a degree from Bridgewater. But after two years of teaching, discrimination caught up with her.
Pre-K expansion, Mask Policy, 2023 Annual Budget Presentation on the agenda
Hope everyone has a wonderful February break. Whether you fill it with rest, adventure or a combination of the both, enjoy!

Last month the New Bedford Coalition to Save Our Schools called on BayCoast Bank to withdraw its support for the proposed Innovators Charter School.
This week bank president and CEO Nicolas Christ did just that! He stepped down from the board of the proposed charter and withdrew any involvement by bank employees.
