A first for Sail Rec! Two of our students and one instructor competed in Sail Newport’s Halloween Howl this past weekend in a fleet of approximately 25 other Club 420s on a shared race course with Lasers and Optis. Lights winds permitted only one race on Saturday but a 180 degree shift and building breeze made things more interesting on Sunday. Many thanks to the parents who made it happen for their sailors and to Sail Newport for hosting this great event every October!

RIGGED AND READY TO GO is our brand-new, out-of-the-box Vanguard Optimist Dingy. This beautiful new addition to the fleet was generously donated by a Westport summer resident. The Plan: To encourage one or more of our beginner summer sailors to test their skills in this year's Halloween Howl, an October weekend regatta for youth hosted annually by Sail Newport. We hope that the next photo of our new "Opti" will be of her crossing the Halloween Howl finish line, in first place!

It’s time to thank everyone for a great year!

Despite the apprehension we faced in successfully running a social and physical activity under COVID-19 restrictions, we can conclude that our 2020 season was one of the best ever and especially relevant during a time when such activities were limited in availability.

Our summer youth program included four sessions each of beginner, intermediate, and advanced sailors. We hosted a special month-long program for participants in Fall River Public School’s extended learning program and conducted a fall home-school session. Our racing team practiced on-site and competed at Bristol Yacht Club, Rhode Island. Over 103 children participated in our programs.

Thanks to all who supported our drysuit fundraiser. The Savers FunDrive, in combination with private donations, enabled us to purchase six drysuits.

To add to this good news, we were gifted three additions to our sailboat fleet: A J22, a Sunfish, and a brand new Optimist dinghy, sail number 16843!

We wish all of our followers a safe, healthy, and successful 2021.

Yes, there IS sailing this year!

Sail Rec!’s summer youth program is scheduled to start June 29 and will include four two-week sessions as follows:

Session I: June 29-July 10
Session II: July 13-July 24
Session III: July 27-August 7
Session IV: August 10-August 21

Ages 9-18

Class time is 12:30-4:30. As always, we will run beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes but they will be limited to eight students each. All classes will be conducted outdoors and each student will be provided with a buff that must be worn when proper distancing cannot be maintained. Each student will also be assigned a lifejacket that must accompany them each day and be returned on the last day of the session. Daily temperature checks will be conducted on each instructor and student. At present, we do not have sufficient indoor classroom space to properly accommodate concurrent classes and it is likely classes will be cancelled on inclement weather days.

Please do not hesitate to call 508-679-0922 x 148 with any questions or concerns.

Thank you to all have contributed to our FUNDrive/Savers dry suit fundraising campaign. Due to issues surrounding the COVID-19 virus outbreak, our drop-off date has been rescheduled for June 2nd. So, there is still plenty of time to drop off your gently-used clothing, shoes, etc. to our boathouse at 200 Davol Street, Fall River. Please call 508-679-0922 x148 before sailing our way and please scroll down to our earlier post for details regarding this effort!

Please help us to extend our sailing season by joining our Savers FUNDrive drysuit fundraiser. Our goal is to build a “community” drysuit collection that will allow our students to sail in cold weather and water.

The amazing young lady in the photo below (extreme right) kicked things off by asking for donations in lieu of presents for her 11th birthday. So far she has collected $420 in cash and 20+ bags of clothing! Thank you, Dalton!!!

Sail Rec! is proud to be one of seven east coast locations for a trash skimmer installation facilitated by Clean Ocean Access (COA) of Middletown, RI. The device is suspended from one of our docks and collects and traps organic and inorganic debris from the water's surface. Other project partners include 11th Hour Racing, Teknikor Contracting, Massachusetts DCR, and the Fall River Fire Department.

Last Monday, Max Kraimer of COA spent some time educating our Fall home school sailing class in the consequences of ocean pollution and how the trash skimmer helps to remove even the smallest piece of trash from the water environment. Thanks, Max!

Our homeshool class was FINALLY treated to a day of just-right-for-learning wind conditions and perfectly executed a "tack-on-the-whistle" drill along the Somerset shoreline! Tacking is sailing (zig-zagging) a boat towards the wind direction, and is typically a difficult skill for beginner sailors to master.

Do you know a local business, organization, or individual that would like to help our sailing program, Sail Rec!, replace our 16 year old Vanguard 420 dinghy sails? A $1500 sponsorship will furnish one boat with a brand new mainsail, jib, and jibsheets, and will include the sponsor’s logo emblazoned on a 3’ x 3’ area of the mainsail. RE-CREATION charges minimal fees to keep our learn-to-sail programs affordable to all area residents, so we rely on outside support to maintain the momentum! Please contact Grace or Chris at 508-679-0922 for more information.

Young sailors are keeping us busy with home-school and after-school sailing. No wind meant lots of land activities for the home-schoolers, and light wind presented challenges for the after-schoolers. However, the sun was finally out and made for a nice day overall!

Hi Everyone:
