Previously known as 'Minority Mental Health Month' the name change was suggested by Mental Health America and the Human Rights Campaign to better reflect the importance of this month.

July is #BIPOCMentalHealthMonth. BIPOC are often faced with years - even generations - of trauma, which translates to socioeconomic disparities and, in turn, is linked to mental health concerns today. Learn more about the #impactoftrauma at mhanational.org/july.

We will continue to provide services to anyone who needs it, regardless of race, identity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, or ethnicity. We will continue to educate ourselves to be better.

In our ever changing world, this virtual day camp helps equip worry-prone little friends with the tools and strategies to proactively help with life’s stresses and worries. Together we’ll use art, stories, and play interventions to explore breathing techniques, psychoeducation, movement, calming activities, and crafts, all while practicing with a group of friends. Parents will also receive a report at the end of camp with helpful tips and an overview of coping techniques from camp to continue at home. Please schedule a 15-minute phone consultation to see if this is a good fit for your son or daughter. Contact Lauren for more information at [email protected] or visit us at sunstonecounselors.com/group-counseling/

Someone you care about has suffered a loss. You want to comfort them but don’t know what to say. Then in a moment of emotional awkwardness and with the best of intentions you say…
“He’s in a better place.”
“There is a reason for everything.”
“I know how you feel.”
“Be strong.”
You meant no harm however, what you just said was not helpful or supportive.

Today we celebrate the freedom that was deserved.

Toxic Masculinity is a cultural concept of manliness that glorifies stoicism, strength, virility, and dominance, and that is socially maladaptive or harmful to mental health. Discussing this openly in a safe space can help to normalize the emotions and experiences men have. This week is Men's Health Week. Help us to end the stigma of men's mental health needs.

It is common to feel overwhelmed throughout the day. Using grounding techniques can help moderate those feelings. The 5-4-3-2-1 technique is great for children and adults and can be done anywhere.
- What are 5 things you can see? Look for small details such as a pattern on the ceiling, the way light reflects off a surface, or an object you never noticed.
- What are 4 things you can feel? Notice the sensations of clothing on your body, the sun on your skin, or the feeling of the chair you are sitting in. Pick an object and examine its weight, texture, and other physical qualities.
- What are 3 things you can hear? Pay special attention to the sounds your mind has tuned out, such as a ticking clock, distant traffic, or trees blowing in the wind.
- What are 2 things you can smell? Try to notice smells in the air around you, like an air freshener or freshly mowed grass. You may also look around for something that has a scent, such as a flower or an unlit candle.
- What is 1 thing you can taste? Carry gum, candy, or small snacks for this step. Pop one in your mouth and focus your attention closely on the flavors.

We’ve all heard someone mention their fear of gaining the “COVID-19” and have seen the many memes about snacking more during social distancing. While these messages aren’t helpful for anyone since we have bigger concerns (i.e. a global pandemic) than putting on a few extra completely normal and non-threatening pounds, these messages remind us that our routines may have shifted significantly. “Am I hungry, stressed, or just bored?” provides a few ways to untangle these emotions and identify your motivations for eating. Today is our graduate intern first day seeing clients. Please share her information.
I just finished this new book for the broken and brokenhearted titled "Perfect Love". Althought small in size and a quick read, it is packed with the power of Jesus. I believe Christians need the encouragement that is in this book. I encourage you to read my book and if so led, please tell others who may benefit. Be blessed! https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Love-Battle-Broken-Brokenhearted/dp/1945698411/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515511290&sr=8-1&keywords=perfect+love
