U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - Ventura

“Some ecosystems are fire-adapted and require fire to be maintained; in some cases, native plants require fire regeneration as part of their life cycle,” said senior wildlife biologist Chris Dellith.

We work with land managers and fire response agencies across California to monitor potential impacts of ongoing wildland fires on rare wildlife and plants. While it’s too early to fully understand the long-term impacts of California’s wildfires on rare wildlife, the primary short-term impact is loss of their habitat. Hadley, in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts (also known as the Pioneer Valley or the Happy Valley), has a mix of rural flavor and easy access to big city amenities. You will find here a reverence for history, a passion for participatory government, and a strong belief in the need for natural resource conservation. Five prestigious colleges and several community colleges are close by. From the 200-employee regional office, you may see deer, turkey, red-tailed hawks, great blue herons and the occasional bobcat or otter from your office window. A 9-mile-long bike path, perfect for lunchtime runs or commuting, is within walking distance. Hadley is less than 2 hours’ drive from great downhill skiing and the Atlantic Ocean. The Connecticut River and many smaller rivers and lakes have boating and fishing. Housing is a mix of newer and older homes ranging from urban condo living to rural farms, all within a half hour’s drive of the Regional Office. New York City is 3 hours to the south, and Hadley is mid-way between Boston and Albany, both less than 2 hours away. The North Atlantic Appalachian Region Division of Migratory Birds is a small and close knit team that values family, fulfilling work, honesty and integrity, respect for others, balance, and continuous learning in our work and our lives. If you have questions about this position, please contact Pam Toschik, [email protected], (413) 253-8610.

The incumbent will be involved with migratory bird issues across Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa and the remote territories in the Pacific. Most Regional Office employees live in the Portland Metro area. Big city excitement and small town charm make Portland, Oregon, known as "the City of Roses", one of the favorite destinations in the West. Portland is situated approximately 70 miles from the Pacific in a magnificent setting between the sparkling waters of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Portland has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with cool and cloudy winters, and warm and dry summers. A little bit creative, a little bit counter-culture, Portland is a year-round, always-evolving city that's home to a mindful community dedicated to keeping its city sustainable, innovative and accessible. There's an enviable public transit system, tax-free shopping and enormous in-city parks offering dozens of cultural attractions. The city is packed with so much character you’ll almost forget to explore its great outdoors. Nearby, you’ll find Mount Hood, the Columbia River Gorge and the Oregon Coast, as well as wine country. Housing is available in either the Portland Metro area or across the Columbia River in Washington. Questions regarding the Portland, Oregon position can be directed to Nanette Seto at [email protected].

If you have questions about the Federal hiring process or qualifying for this position, please contact: [email protected]

The samplers will be retrieved in four weeks to monitor for new invasive species. The next photo shows collecting benthic invertebrate samples using sweep nets in the Lower Niagara River for later identification in the laboratory.
