Wingmen - I’m excited to release the 2023 update to my Leadership Library. There are some great reads along with a few of the podcasts I’m listening to.
I often tell people that I didn’t really start reading, professionally, until I became a SNCO, largely in part because I felt as if I didn’t have enough time. That said, I’ve learned to find the time…even if it’s 5 minutes a day. Whether it’s a page, a chapter, an article, a book, or a podcast, the impact of “learning something every day” has had an immeasurable effect on me.
Happy reading, listening, and learning!

I would like to share the outstanding off-duty care recently rendered by my two of my medics (Hall and Carney) and a third who I'd like to meet (Joseph Gelhaus). “Joey” was casually on leave at the time, to boot! Trusted care...ANYWHERE!
Technical Sergeant Andrew Hall, Staff Sergeant Thomas Carney, and SSgt Joseph Gelhaus were first responders while off-duty in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada.
Sergeant Hall, Carney and Gelhaus were first on-scene after witnessing a motorcycle crash and subsequent 40 foot ejection of the female rider.
Risking their safety on the side of a narrow highway, they grabbed their personal medical equipment and immediately began directing scene safety and assessing the patient.
Sergeant Hall immediately held c-spine stabilization and began airway assessment. He also discovered a potential open head injury and head laceration.
Sergeant Carney then began a rapid trauma assessment. His assessment revealed significant pelvic pain and a shortened left leg and determined a high likelihood of a life-threatening pelvic fracture.
Sergeant Carney and Gelhaus sprung to action by making an improvised pelvic binder, by combining two tourniquets from their medical kits, to stabilize the pelvis and stop further bleeding.
Both Sergeant Carney and Hall also performed a rapid neurological assessment, to include determining she had a decreased Glasgow-coma scale rating (GCS).
While Sergeant Hall and Carney with their neuro assessment, Sergeant Gelhaus irrigated and dressed the other wounds that the driver had sustained.
The local EMS then arrived on scene, but dynamic trio’s care didn't stop there.
Despite attempts from the local EMS, Sergeant Hall was successful with establishing IV access as well as applying dressing and bandage to the patient's head injury.
Sergeant Carney directed obtaining vital signs and quickly identified that patient was in shock, likely from massive hemorrhage from her pelvis.
Furthermore, they provided a crucial hand-off report to the responding "life flight" MEDEVAC and assisted with loaded the patient safely into the helicopter.
Sergeant Hall, Carney, and Gelhaus’s steadfast response, critical thinking, recognition of life-threatening injuries, and quick application of the improvised binder coupled with intravenous access was imperative to this patient’s survival.

Chief Master Sergeants are individually to be regarded as people:
Who cannot be bought
Whose word is their bond
Who put character above wealth
Who possess opinions and a will
Who are larger than their vocations
Who will not lose their individuality in a crowd
Who do not hesitate to take chances
Who will be as honest in small things as in great ones
Who will make no compromise with wrong
Whose ambitions are not confined to their own selfish desires and interests
Who are true to their friends through good report and evil report, in adversity as well as prosperity
Who do not believe that shrewdness, cunning, and hard-headedness are the best qualities for winning success
Who are not ashamed or afraid to stand for the truth when it is unpopular, who can say "no" with emphasis, although all the world is saying "yes"
These last 3 days, I had the opportunity to complete my TCCC-MP refresher training at JB Andrews. The instructor cadre (SSgt Miller, SSgt Freeman, TSgt Medina-Lopez, TSgt Sheehan) were awesome. I love how the TCCC cadre at many of our MTFs are innovative, creative, and incorporate our other base partners into our training. Teamwork makes the Dreamwork
If you ever wondered if your Senior 4N Leadership team does the training that we are all required to do, yes we do 😁. Now it’s time to go home a relax. I hope everyone has a great weekend! More exciting news coming next week 😁.

Embedded AF medics enhance security forces readiness training
Some Airmen dedicate their lives to protecting and defending; others dedicate their lives to healing and saving the lives of those who do.
Today I had the opportunity to sit in on the Army 68W Summit as they address the current and future requirements of their combat medics. I wasn’t alone 😃, CMSgt Thomas Ward (AETC 4N Functional Manager), Capt Ingrid Williams (AMSA Program Director) and SMSgt Eleana Langley (AMSA SEL); were also in attendance in a room full of Army Senior Medical Leaders. Discussions today consisted of:
- recent 68W efforts and tasks
- AEMT Proof of concept
- Autologous Blood Training
- Prolonged Care
- critical care flight paramedic
- MEDSIM T capabilities
- Sustainment and Career Progression
- Joint/DHA/ JTS
The next couple of days, further discussions will take place as the Army takes a deep dive and strategic look at the 2030 Combat Medic.
What does this mean for us? When I think of Joint Interoperability, I think of what are our commonalities, where can we learn and share from each other, how do we compliment based on our requirements and capabilities.
what what!
: Senior Airman Jaclyn Pearsall, 852nd Medical Squadron flight and operational medical technician, stationed at NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, Germany. While waiting at the bus stop for her children Pearsall witnessed a bicyclist get stuck by a vehicle.
Pearsall ran toward the injured woman who appeared to have a broken leg and ankle. Pearsall cared for and evaluated the woman’s injuries while another bystander arrived with an emergency kit. Pearsall used provided sustained onsite patient care to the cyclist’s wounds until the ambulance arrived 25 minutes later.
Pearsall was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal for her actions.
A lot of good stuff rolling out, what are you most excited for?

This week we had the Air and Space Forces Association conference 19-21 Sep at the Ga***rd Hotel and Convention Center, National Harbor, MD. It is a professional development event where you hear the latest and greatest on what’s to come as well as hear our Senior Air Force and Space Force Leaders address concerns that many Airmen and Guardians have on their mind.
It was also great to see a few 4N medics in attendance. 😃
One thing that I know many of you may be excited about is the potential for Assignment Swaps. More to come as I don’t know the specifics yet.
Hot off the press! The Joint Team (Purple Book)
I tried to deny the fact that SMSgt Valerie Lee (AF EMS State Director) and SMSgt Ashley Jackson (EMS Program Manager) will be leaving us on HAF staff soon. They were a power house duo that knows how to get things done. Was it easy? Heck no! Did they have obstacles? Everyday! But their pride, passion, perseverance, grit, and leadership has propelled our AF EMS program forward as we continue to provide ready reliable trusted care to our DoD beneficiaries in the prehospital setting. On behalf of Brig Gen Ryder, myself, and the Total Nursing Force; thank you! You have definitely left your mark and we look forward to seeing what you accomplish next.
Happy Surgical Technologist Week!!!

Question from the field: What MTFs are using a link or tablet for outpatient genesis patient check-in screenings?
Air Force Nurse Corps Diversity and Inclusion - Inspiration And Mentorship in the Nursing Services "I AM ME" presents Maj Joseph Broeckelmann. I had the honor and pleasure of working with Maj Broeckelmann while assigned at JBLE - Langley ED. It has been wonderful watching him thrive as an Air Force leader and mentor over the past 5 years. In his profile, he hit on a key topic - 'Paying It Forward'. The simplest way to define “pay it forward” is that when someone does something for you, instead of paying that person back directly, you pass it on to another person instead. Maj Broeckelmann continues to do this simple yet highly impactful task both during his on-duty and off-duty times. He understands that 'Paying It Forward' is not about a bullet or recognition for assisting someone, but about helping to pave the way for future Airmen, Service members, and civilian partners. It's about solidifying stagnant relationships between different medical communities and establishing new ones. It's about not only knowing the way, but also showing the way. Thank you so much for sharing and your continued phenomenal leadership and mentorship, Maj Joseph Broeckelmann!
