Sing the Faith

after Robert Browning God’s in His heaven, wrote the old poet, all’s right with the world. Seems up for debate with unjust suffering so commonplace, and every day seemingly more of it. No poet, no preacher from any pulpit, could ever resolve the mystery of fate and free will, of happenstance and...

In a new documentary, Will Willimon puts his preaching toolbox to the test

Especially for Knox Bible Study.

(RNS) — Good preaching took a hit during the coronavirus — with many preachers speaking into their computers from their living rooms or from an empty sanctuary, cut off from the eyes and ears of their listeners. A 30-minute documentary about Will Willimon, one of the most effective preachers in ...

Living covenantally and sustainably

Living covenantally and sustainably

Living covenantally and sustainably

As a geologist, I initially felt no need to connect science with faith; I neatly compartmentalized the two, thinking that science dealt with the external, objective world while faith was concerned with an interior, spiritual world. But the search for ways of living sustainably showed me that the two...

Prayer for Earth Day

The earth, and all that is within it, is yours, Lord God. Every creature great and small, you made and cherish them all. We confess, Creator God, that too often we have exploited rather than loved your good earth. We recognize our selfishness, our shortsightedness, our ungratefulness and our lack of...

A Good Friday Meditation: Could Peter Forgive Himself?

A Good Friday Meditation: Could Peter Forgive Himself?

Remorse, repentance, self-forgiveness. Peter leads us to consider all of these practices. On Good Friday, can we repent, stick with Jesus, and find forgiveness?

For Jesus, there are no countries to be conquered, no ideologies to be imposed, no people to be dominated. There are only children, women and men to be loved.
-Henri Nouwen

“It is my growing conviction that my life belongs to others just as much as it belongs to myself and that what is experienced as most unique often proves to be most solidly embedded in the common condition of being human.”

Last year I released This Is the Mystery of Easter, which was a passion project of a book (aren't they all!) to tell the Easter story better. It's still available as a pdf from my website, or you can buy it anywhere you buy books.

As we enter Lent, the Interfaith Immigration Coalition shares it's guide - Lenten Values: Springing into Action - https://www.interfaithimmigration.org/sdm_downloads/lenten-values-springing-into-action/

These nine Lenten reflections can help both individuals and communities strengthen the energies of our hearts to repeal and strengthen, and heal and transform immigration policies during this time of urgency and potential in our nation. Farmworkers are desperately hoping for protections and benefits. Refugees are praying for our nation’s hospitality to re-open. Asylum seekers are awaiting due process. Families are aching to be re-united. Immigrants being deported to violence desperately need support to avoid tragedy. These devotions, written by multiple faith leaders within the IIC, provide both a heart guide and action guides to confess, respond, and finally offer the promise of Resurrection Hope to all God’s children.
