The Moton story has been closely connected to four Emmy Award-winning films—each helping carry this history, and the lives shaped by what followed, to audiences far beyond Farmville.

Notably, three of the films were produced by students from Longwood University’s Department of Communication Studies (COMMLab), guided by faculty and rooted in the stories of this community.

Together, they reflect how the Moton story continues to live, grow, and reach new generations through both public media and student storytelling.

The story doesn’t stop at the museum—it continues through film, classrooms, and community voices.

We invite you to watch, learn, and support these Emmy Award-winning films:

Today in Virginia we celebrate Oliver Hill Day!

Hill was the most distinguished and successful of the many African American attorneys who achieved major breakthroughs in the Civil Rights Movement in Virginia. In large part because of attorneys like Hill, Virginia's Civil Rights Movement was known for its many important legal victories rather than for violence and recrimination. In recognition of Hill’s contributions to the legal profession and the nation, President Bill Clinton awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999. By the time he died at age 100, Hill had become one of the most respected and revered Virginians of the twentieth century.

Learn about Hill’s important role in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, in our Shaping the Constitution web page at https://www.lva.virginia.gov/collections/educator-resources/online-classroom/stc/units/education

Putting people first: Beginning in 2028, landmark legislation passed by Gov. Spanberger and the General Assembly will guarantee working Virginians the right to take up to twelve weeks of paid time off to welcome a child, care for a seriously ill loved one, or recover from their own serious health condition.

Today, I signed the Momnibus — a package of bills to improve and expand healthcare coverage for mothers and families. No mother should have to fear dying during or after childbirth. The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any high-income country, and we know Black women are at particularly high risk.

I am deeply grateful for the years of work by Senator L. Louise Lucas, Delegate Margaret Franklin, Destiny for VA, and Laura Jane Cohen to protect mothers and families, and I am proud to sign this legislation into law.

Heather Cox Richardson provides background on the Republican Party's history with gerrymandering:

Virginia voters yesterday agreed to a constitutional amendment that would temporarily redistrict the state if any other state redistricted for partisan reasons: that is, in retaliation for the partisan redistricting President Donald J.
