Tate Reeves has always been for sale. The question is just who’s buying.

Right now, there are two big bidders.

The first is the national school choice lobby.

After Mississippi’s own Senate killed HB 2, the school voucher bill that would have siphoned public dollars to private schools, outside advocates descended on Jackson demanding Reeves call a special session to override the will of the Legislature.

Reeves, who “has never ruled it out,” is listening, going as far as saying he’s “very, very interested” in getting that legislation signed before his time in office runs out… despite the issue being deeply unpopular with Mississippians.

The second bidder is the data center industry, led by groups such as Elon Musk’s xAI in Southaven, and assisted by sweeping tax exemptions engineered largely by Reeves… even after similar legislation failed to pass through normal channels.

Another issue deeply unpopular with Mississippians. Another still championed by Reeves.

This is a pattern, not a coincidence.

Mississippi Today’s investigation found that Reeves’ top campaign donors — those who gave $50,000 or more — have collected a staggering $1.4 billion in state contracts from agencies he oversees since 2020. His largest individual donor was appointed to the Gaming Commission. A hospital CEO wrote a $25,000 check and received a government appointment three weeks later. Campaign donors landed seats on the IHL Board of Trustees, the Community College Board, the Lottery Corporation… the machinery of Mississippi government, redistributed to the people who funded his rise.

He’s been called “transactional” by Republicans and Democrats alike.

So when Tate Reeves ignores Mississippi’s teachers (who are near the bottom of national pay rankings) but moves heaven and earth to give data center billionaires a tax-free welcome mat, and threatens to override the Legislature itself to deliver vouchers to school choice lobbyists who flew in from out of state…

Ask yourself: who is he working for?

Because it’s not you.

Mississippi Republicans have a message for you: Only the rights they approve of deserve protection.

The rest? Those are fair game.

This session, a bill requiring background checks at gun shows died in committee. No hearing. No debate. No conversation. Because in Mississippi, the state that leads the entire nation in gun deaths, Republicans take one look at a background check bill and cry overreach. They won’t lift a finger to address a problem we lead the nation in.

But they’ll restrict your rights in a heartbeat to fix a problem that doesn’t exist.

Because those same legislators are racing to pass the SHIELD Act, demanding that Mississippi voters produce a passport or birth certificate just to register to vote. They want to run every voter in this state through a federal database that has wrongly flagged thousands of U.S. citizens as non-citizens in other states. A database so unreliable that Texas and Missouri have already reported hundreds of errors.

And why? To solve a problem that does not exist.

Not one case. Not one conviction. Not one credible allegation of a non-citizen voting in Mississippi. They invented a crisis, then built a roadblock around it.

So here’s where we are:

A gun sale with no background check? “Don’t you dare interfere with someone’s constitutional rights.”

A citizen trying to register to vote? “Prove it. Show your papers. Check the database. Wait for the letter. You’ve got 30 days or you lose your registration.”

These are the same people. The same votes. The same legislature.

More than 90% of Mississippians don’t have a passport. Countless others don’t have easy access to a birth certificate… especially in the rural communities these lawmakers claim to represent. The SHIELD Act doesn’t protect elections. It protects incumbents. It makes the electorate smaller and easier to control.

They don’t want more barriers on guns. They want more barriers on you.

This isn’t about election security and they know it. It’s voter suppression dressed up in a flag pin, and Mississippi deserves better.

Mississippi Senate: Vote NO on concurrence with the House amendment to SB 2588. If the rights of Mississippians matter to you, prove it. Prove you stand for all of them, not just the ones that keep you in office.

The data is in, and it's exactly what you'd expect.

Laws like the federal SAVE Act and Mississippi's proposed SHIELD Act don't burden every voter equally. National research shows 21.3 million voting-age citizens don't have ready access to proof of citizenship. Citizens of color are more likely than white citizens to lack those documents — 11% vs. 8%.

And citizens earning under $50,000 are nearly three times less likely to have a current passport than those earning $100,000 or more.

Now factor in Mississippi specifically: we're 37.7% Black and carry a 17.8% poverty rate. Replacing a birth certificate costs $17. A first-time passport? $165 in fees and months in waiting time... and that's if you were born here. For naturalized citizens, federal citizenship documents can run $555 to $1,385.

Here's the part that should make you angry: Mississippi's free voter ID card cannot be used to solve this problem, because you have to already be a registered voter to get one.

So who gets burdened? Low-income Black voters. Young people who've moved. Women whose names have changed. Disabled voters. Naturalized citizens. First-time voters.

Who doesn't? People who already have a passport, stable housing, money for fees, and easy access to their records.

These laws don't protect elections. They protect the status quo, and the data makes clear exactly who pays the price. We already require Voter ID to cast a vote. Election fraud is almost completely non-existent.

But Republicans are willing to break the system and disenfranchise thousands rather than represent the actual will of the people they represent.

The bill is on the schedule for the Mississippi Senate TODAY (March 16), so if you plan to reach out to your State Senator... your time is running out fast.

Mississippi has a child care crisis, and it’s affecting families, workers, and our entire economy.

Right now, there aren’t enough affordable child care options for the families who need them. That means parents are being forced to make impossible choices: miss work, turn down jobs, or leave the workforce entirely.

Child care providers are struggling too. Many operate on thin margins, can’t afford to raise wages, and are closing their doors or cutting back services.

There was an effort to do more. Mississippi Democrat Sen. David Blount pushed for a long-term, sustainable investment in child care, a plan aimed at stabilizing the system for both families and providers.

Instead, Senate leadership added $15 million in one-time funding during the budget process.

Here’s the key point: experts and advocates say Mississippi needs around $60 million annually to truly address the crisis.

So while $15 million is a step, it falls far short, and because it’s not permanent, it won’t prevent disruptions as federal relief dollars expire.

The difference is simple:

$15 million = temporary relief

$60 million = a path toward stability

When we invest in child care the right way:

Parents can work

Businesses can grow

Kids get a stronger start

Mississippi families don’t just need a short-term patch: they need a system they can count on. And that comes down to the choices our state leaders make.
