Genesee County Literacy Coalition

Genesee County Literacy Coalition Genesee County Literacy Coalition is a collaborative of community partners serving Adult Learners. An estimated 21% of people living in Genesee County and 35% of those living in the city of Flint read at or below literacy Level 1.

(NALS 1992) That means they have difficulty with even the simplest reading, writing and math skills. The Genesee County Literacy Coalition is dedicated to promoting literacy and supporting literacy providers throughout the county. GCLC was established in 1979 to provide tutor training and literacy services throughout the county. We also work to assist people with English as a second language. The coalition continues solely through volunteer time and support. Our organization has trained over 500 Literacy Tutors since the coalition began, served over 1,500 adults with reading difficulties. The coalition is a nonprofit association run entirely by volunteers. Members include adult students, volunteer literacy tutors, libraries, representatives from literacy providers, businesses, community groups and other concerned individuals. Our members support the coalition through small annual dues and many also volunteer their time and services. Additional support comes from fundraising, grant writing and donations. Our organization is always looking for new members, provider sites, tutors, donations and support. Our biggest supporter is Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 5151 Lennon Road, Flint (810-720-5152, www.trinityunitedpc.org), where we hold our board meetings and tutor appreciation dinners. We are in desperate need of provider locations. A job of a provider is to have a representative from that entity become a part of our board and maintain tutors out of their organization to “Help Adults Read for Free”. The responsibility is an easy one, just to have a goal of empowering others and giving them hope with the skill of reading. We are currently involved in Michigan's Adult Learning Region 9 meetings to create partnerships to serve adult learners in our state. There is a whole strategy being developed to assist low level readers to be able to engage a family sustaining wage. So, we gladly encourage new providers to help us in these quests. Our meetings are held the second Monday of every month at 6:30pm at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 5151 Lennon Road, Flint, Mi 48507 810-720-5152 (church) 810-239-9425 (GCLC). Please call at least a day ahead to be included on our agenda. The church is located behind the shopping center. The GCLC welcomes your support in any form. Here are some ways you can contribute: - Become a member - Refer others to our services - Volunteer your time and experience - Become a literacy tutor (Free Training provided) - Assist with fundraisers, promoting the coalition, etc. - Assist with donations If you have any questions, inquiries, interest in volunteering, etc., please contact call Genesee County Literacy Coalition at 810-239-9425 or Aileen at 810-919-5078. Or correspond to: GCLC c/o Christ Enrichment Center, 322 East Hamilton Ave., Flint, MI 48505.
