Meet your SG, Angela Wang! Angela is one of our most faithful senators and is in her final year of graduate school.
“I am in the Master of Business Administration program. I received my Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration with a General Business minor at the University of Michigan-Flint in April 2018. I am passionate about health equity and mental health awareness. I enjoy travelling, playing trivia, karaoke, and spending time with my family and friends. I am a member of student government because I want to help better our campus, especially regarding mental health, and to help make the campus accessible to all. I welcome my peers to reach out to me about any issues that they feel need to be addressed to help improve our community.”

To our fellow Wolverines:

We write to you with heavy hearts as we offer our deepest condolences to all of those who lost loved ones in the recent Atlanta Spa Shooting. This act of violence was clearly targeting Asian-American women in their workplace. All too often, aggression that stems from white supremacy and misogynistic ideals, makes its way into community safe spaces and wreaks havoc. As your Student Government it is our duty to address these tragic moments and call for unity among the student body. As a campus community we must stand against all forms of intolerance and provide solace in a time of grieving.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak more and more political rhetoric and media coverage has created a dialogue that attempts to justify xenophobia and racism towards Asian-Americans. It is not a coincidence that this rhetoric has coincided with the rise in hate crimes against this demographic. An example of this was a statement made by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s office when Capt. Jay Baker attempted to rationalize the actions of the murderer by saying he had “a really bad day” before the shootings. Media and law enforcement agencies must be held accountable to report on racial violence in an equitable way. Justifying the attacks of white terrorists is a symptom of white supremacist culture and needs to be addressed, as the victims and their loved ones are the most deserving of our sympathy.

It is also important for us to recognize the intersectionality of the victims. We must acknowledge that many of the victims were Asian-American women, and understand how their identity as Asian-Americans and as women were simultaneously targeted. As the hashtag #stopasianhate continues to trend on our social media, we must be aware this is an issue of racism as well as sexism. As individuals we should be aware of our own intersectionality and denounce bigotry and hatred in all of its forms.

At a recent event a student spoke up and said that activism goes beyond releasing statements and that could not be more true. As an organization it is our responsibility to stand with our student body; the Student Government at the University of Michigan-Flint will not be silent on matters that target any demographic, not only in words but through our actions. Our Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will be working with the Director of the ICC to create a comprehensive plan to better serve all students. It is our responsibility to speak out against all forms of targeted violence and create equitable solutions for our community. Our work to continue to combat systemic racism and sexism as a nation and as a community is ongoing.

Rest in peace Delaina Ashley Yaun, Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Julie Park, Hyeon Jeong Park, Paul Andre Michels, and those whose names have not yet been released.

In solidarity,

Samantha Uptmor Carl Grolle Omar Elnour

Hello everyone. Greetings. My name is Pariksh*t Mishra. I am an Indian student who studied at DPS - Modern Indian School, Doha - Qatar in the CBSE curriculum. I am a prospective student at the UofM Flint. I will be studying the Mechanical Engineering program. I have two questions to ask all the current students, ex-students, and the faculty. 1. When I pass out of Michigan will my graduation certificate say which campus I have studied from if: a) I finish 4 years at Flint campus, and b) I study for 2 years at Flint and then do my graduation from Ann Arbor? 2. Can you please give me links of various groups on WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. where I can talk to current students, ex-students, and the faculty? I have a few questions to ask them. Thank you all for your time and please forgive me for bothering you with such vague questions.
When these right-wing, neo-con, smart-bombing- wherever, war-mongers, ask us, "(B)uddy, what about you guys killing each other?!.." Civilized Savage gods (CSG) is dedicated to being part of the solution. Of course Black Lives Matter, but we (righteous/sane people) need to do our collective all to put God's Presence into that split second of evil indiscretion. We know for an Actual Fact that God is Well Able to get between that finger and that trigger- even when that trigger is dis-porportionately Black or Brown ("Super-Predators", "Urban Youth", "Gang Bangers" "Thugs"...) Civilized Savage gods (CSG) pledge to do our humble part to help curb this "epidemic" of sickening gun violence in America...Straight talk, brah, we're pointing with dirty hands. A real man always thinks of the long-term implications of his actions. They say, shooting incidents have decreased by 28% through the first two months of 2018 in Chicago!! .. Homicide rate in New York for 2017 was lowest in 70 years!! Los Angeles homicides down 6% in 2017 too..Keep prayin' it safe.. NO MORE, "US KILLING US.." PASS IT ON, PLEASE NO CURSING/ ALL FAITHS (brief video clip) Produced by CSG Music Group (#csgmusicgroup..[email protected])
