You've come to the right place! What we, as student government, are about is making positive, forward, worthwhile, and impactful changes here on campus. What we as the student representatives want to do is give a chance for every walk of life on campus to come out and join us at a variety of events as well including anyone and everyone into each of these events. We are here to empower your success and our goal here in SG is to serve you, the students. In order to advocate for you, we need to hear your issues and concerns. So if you ever have any issues and think we can help in anyway, please don’t hesitate to come by our office in UCEN 364. If you can’t make it to the office, feel free to email us at [email protected].

Mission: Student Government serves as the official representative of the student community in expressing opinions and interests to the appropriate faculty, administrative, and student agencies. The purpose of the Student Government is to listen to and act upon the needs and concerns of students. The Student Government is responsible for appointing students to all University decision making committees and assists student clubs/organizations through the recognition of club constitutions and allocation of money for approved activities. "We the Students come together to promote better welfare of Students, ensure the effective advocacy and representation of Students and Student rights, enhance the academic and Student Life of the campus, develop leaders who will challenge the present and enrich the students for ourselves, our future fellow Students, and our University" As stated in the Preamble of the Constitution for the University of Michigan-Flint Student Government

Meet Your Student Goverment! Omar is a senior studying Human Biology and is our Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion! “I was interested in joining Student Government so I may take action and contribute my unique experiences and ideas to our university, and by extension, our community. A position in student government would afford me the ability to collaborate with other SG members and take a serious look at the policies we have ingrained in our system today, so to make necessary advancements for tomorrow. I have selected the position of Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for a number of reasons. The position calls for someone to be the voice of diversity on campus. Through my experience as president of Muslim Student Association, I attempted to collaborate with other clubs and universities as much as possible. For some students, it’s easy to keep to themselves without getting involved in campus life or feel represented. My goal is to help make students of all backgrounds not only feel welcome, but also empowered and heard by their university. I plan to accomplish this by doing the following:
1. Become a primary contact for clubs that promote diversity, and a direct connection for them to SG.
2. Create campus events that bring diverse students together to hold important dialogues in a healthy, nonjudgmental environment.
3. Review current university policies for possible improvement
4. Advocate for policy-development that improves campus life for diverse students.
5. I see an opportunity to address public health for students, by instilling a system of assessment through voluntary surveys, policy making in response to what issues we discover, and assurance that our developed policies are effective. We won’t find the solutions to all our problems by only analyzing documents; we must also consult the student body to find the root of our issues, and that’s how I believe we can best give a voice to our students.”

Meet your SG Eboard starting off with Samantha! “As the President of Student Government it is my pleasure to represent YOU! At UM Flint I am pursuing a degree in Political Science. I also have an Associates in Arts and an Advanced Certificate in Global Peace Studies from Delta College. This year I will be a senior, and in my free time I absolutely love to read and hike! I find both to be a really nice way to wind down and relax. I joined Student Government because when I was previously a Senator and really enjoyed all of the work we do! I am passionate about continuing to connect with other students to continue to help make UM Flint better! Being in Student Government to me means being someone who other students can come to with issues or concerns. I have an open email policy if there’s ever anything anyone needs.”

09/16/2020

To our fellow wolverines,

On Tuesday, September 8th, the Center for Social Justice & Inclusion on the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus planned two events occurring simultaneously. These events, titled “BIPOC Cafe” (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) and the “Non-POC Cafe” (Non-People of Color) have since become a widespread topic of controversy regarding their purpose/intentions as well as their names.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn Student Government has issued a statement that can be found here https://www.facebook.com/umdsg/posts/10157576625972643 . This can also be found on all of their social media platforms. These events were designed off the concepts of “race-based caucuses and affinity groups” in which the events held would create “an opportunity for marginalized groups and the privileged groups to stand in their own identities and experiences to explore the intersections of race, power and privilege”.

While the intent of the program was pure, the language used in promoting this event was harmful, and labels such as “non-POC” do not give justice to the marginalization of BIPOC. There is nothing wrong with deliberating on “POC issues” or “White issues,” however the advertising of this event gave the impression of being discriminatory, and when conveying such messages to the community, inclusivity must be made a priority. Though these topics are sensitive at times it is imperative that we face them together. When pursuing the values of diversity, equity and inclusivity, language is key in communicating properly, and cultivating a respectful environment so that community members can feel safe and valued.

To address this issue we have collaborated with the UM- Dearborn Student Government to host a
dialogue event on Friday, September 18th, 2020, 3:00-5:15 p.m. This event is open to both the Flint and Dearborn campus communities, we encourage students to attend and contribute your thoughts and feelings on these issues.

We want to ensure that all voices are respected and heard. The purpose of the event is to collaboratively work as University of Michigan Students to continue to grow and improve from our mistakes.

If there is a topic you feel is important to discuss at the dialogue event, please submit your ideas and suggestions here: https://bit.ly/3kdfY7m

Hello everyone. Greetings. My name is Pariksh*t Mishra. I am an Indian student who studied at DPS - Modern Indian School, Doha - Qatar in the CBSE curriculum. I am a prospective student at the UofM Flint. I will be studying the Mechanical Engineering program. I have two questions to ask all the current students, ex-students, and the faculty. 1. When I pass out of Michigan will my graduation certificate say which campus I have studied from if: a) I finish 4 years at Flint campus, and b) I study for 2 years at Flint and then do my graduation from Ann Arbor? 2. Can you please give me links of various groups on WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. where I can talk to current students, ex-students, and the faculty? I have a few questions to ask them. Thank you all for your time and please forgive me for bothering you with such vague questions.
When these right-wing, neo-con, smart-bombing- wherever, war-mongers, ask us, "(B)uddy, what about you guys killing each other?!.." Civilized Savage gods (CSG) is dedicated to being part of the solution. Of course Black Lives Matter, but we (righteous/sane people) need to do our collective all to put God's Presence into that split second of evil indiscretion. We know for an Actual Fact that God is Well Able to get between that finger and that trigger- even when that trigger is dis-porportionately Black or Brown ("Super-Predators", "Urban Youth", "Gang Bangers" "Thugs"...) Civilized Savage gods (CSG) pledge to do our humble part to help curb this "epidemic" of sickening gun violence in America...Straight talk, brah, we're pointing with dirty hands. A real man always thinks of the long-term implications of his actions. They say, shooting incidents have decreased by 28% through the first two months of 2018 in Chicago!! .. Homicide rate in New York for 2017 was lowest in 70 years!! Los Angeles homicides down 6% in 2017 too..Keep prayin' it safe.. NO MORE, "US KILLING US.." PASS IT ON, PLEASE NO CURSING/ ALL FAITHS (brief video clip) Produced by CSG Music Group (#csgmusicgroup..[email protected])
