The Odyssey Method of Treatment was designed and developed by Dr. Judianne Densen-Gerber JD.MD in the late sixties. Densen-Gerber believed that substance abuse disorders were the symptom of underlying psychological dysfunction, and that drug and alcohol abuse only camouflage the addicts psycho-social spiritual pathology. Dr. Densen-Gerber modified and enhanced the Therapeutic Community Model (TC) traditionally utilized for the treatment of mental health disorders. The Odyssey Method of Treatment is based on professionally supervised open group confrontation and peer accountability. Therefore Odyssey encourages personal growth, character development, and spiritual healing to replace drug dependency. The Odyssey Village has evolved through our need to offer residents a comprehensive and holistic form of treatment. The village concept recognizes addiction as a chronic problem that requires a long term relationship. The community or TC serves as a surrogate and/or extended family. It provides residents the opportunity to be adopted into a healthy family structure that may or may not be in place prior to treatment.

Mission: Odyssey House, Inc. is a multi-service therapeutic community for the treatment of people with substance abuse disorders and mental health problems. Its mission is to provide intervention, primary and secondary substance abuse prevention/treatment, and mental health services to the community at large, with a focus on the indigent population. The organization's overall goal is to indirectly prevent ten people from abusing drugs for every one person who is treated at the facility for substance abuse and/or co-occurring disorders, with a principle goal of interrupting the intergenerational cycle of poverty, violence, criminality and substance abuse by returning productive members of society back to families, developing stable families, safe neighborhoods and providing community education for a more productive society.

08/31/2020

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. Why international? Because addiction was declared a global epidemic in 2017. There are 31 million people who have a substance use disorder in the world. Alcohol has caused 3.3 million deaths worldwide, yet less than half of the population (38.3%) drinks alcohol.

Overdose is preventable. Talk to people about addiction. Allow others the space to talk about addition. Erase your own personal biases so the stigma can be eliminated. There is no shame in seeking help.

Flint Odyssey House honors those we have lost today by wearing a purple ribbon. Will you do the same with us? Educate yourself and others about addiction and remember our phone number if you or anyone else needs help. Flint Odyssey House 810-238-5888. We do recover.
