Approximately one year ago, Judge Barkey’s mother-in-law was the victim of a telephone scam. An individual (or individuals) called her claiming to be her grandson (Judge Barkey’s son) stating he was in trouble and asking that she send him money through Western Union to a particular destination. The completely fabricated story involved a trip to Florida, followed by an arrest and a need for money to get out of jail. The truth was that Judge Barkey’s son was in his bed sleeping in Flushing. This incident affected her both emotionally and physically.
As a result, Judge Barkey and Sheriff Pickell spoke at the majority of senior centers in Genesee County alerting their members about this phone scam and what to do if it happens to one of them or someone they know. It has come to our attention as recently as January 17, 2013, the same phone scam is continuing. The caller is claiming to be the grandson of the victim and claims he was arrested for drunk driving in Canada and is requesting bail money. The caller had pertinent family information which made him believable. The caller then gave instructions how to pay the $3000 bond. Thankfully this most recent victim did not follow the instructions. Please get the word out that this senior citizen phone scam has returned and if you are contacted call the authorities.
