'Pursue every avenue' for justice in Flint water crisis | Opinion

What happened to Flint wasn't an anomaly. It was a warning to other communities across America. We must get serious about improving America’s aging water infrastructure and make significant improvements in communities like Flint so that this never happens again.

In Congress, I worked to establish the Flint Registry to provide Flint families access to critical resources and help mitigate the health impacts of lead. In 2016, I secured $170 million to help remove and replace lead pipes in Flint. And now I’m working with President Biden to remove 100 percent of America’s lead pipes, to ensure clean drinking water and create good-paying infrastructure jobs.

Government has to make it right.

Congratulations to Grand Blanc’s LaTonda Anderson on winning the $1 million prize in the MI Shot To Win Sweepstakes! Thank you to all the Michiganders who have gotten vaccinated to protect themselves, their families and their communities.

In Congress, I helped pass the American Rescue Plan to ensure free and equitable vaccine distribution, so that every Michigander can get a vaccine.

The second round of winners were from Grand Blanc, Rockford and Madison Heights.

As co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional PFAS Task Force, I'm working to clean up PFAS contamination and hold polluters responsible. Michigan families shouldn't have to worry about harmful chemicals in their drinking water, lakes and rivers or air.

Canada to reopen its borders to fully vaccinated Americans starting Aug. 9

I'm pleased that our friend and ally Canada will begin reopening travel to fully vaccinated Americans starting August 9.

Earlier this month, I led Republicans and Democrats in Congress in urging a science-based approach to quickly and safely guide the reopening of the U.S.-Canada border. With nearly $1.7 billion in goods and services crossing the border every day, our economy is closely connected to Canada.

U.S.-Canada border restrictions on nonessential travel have been in place since March 2020 due to COVID-19.

Serving with John Lewis in Congress, and helping him cast his proxy vote when he became ill, was one of the greatest honors of my life.

The Future USNS John Lewis (T-AO 205) Christening Ceremony

One year ago, our nation lost an incredible champion of civil and voting rights, Congressman John Lewis. John was a dear friend of mine, who inspired me daily and encouraged us all to get into ‘good trouble’ in the pursuit of justice and equality.

I am honored to pay tribute to John’s legacy at the christening of the U.S. Naval Ship John Lewis.

We must continue to honor his memory by fighting to expand the right to vote and passing H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, to ensure all Americans can cast their ballot freely.

The christening ceremony for the future USNS John Lewis (T-AO 205), the first of six vessels for the U.S. Navy’s John Lewis-class fleet oiler program, will b...

Democrats want to expand Medicare benefits through spending bill

Michigan seniors deserve high-quality, affordable health care through Medicare so they can live with dignity, economic security and peace of mind.

I support a plan to expand benefits so that Medicare covers hearing, dental and vision care. Our plan would also cap out-of-pocket expenses for seniors, who often live on a fixed income.

Congressional Democrats plan to use their multi-trillion-dollar spending proposal to achieve their longstanding goals of broadening Medicare benefits for seniors.

Biden OKs disaster declaration after Detroit-area flooding

Thank you, President Biden for quickly approving Michigan’s disaster declaration after recent severe storms and flooding.

My office will continue working with FEMA officials to get aid to Michiganders in need. Individuals affected by severe weather can seek assistance by registering online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA.

The White House said Thursday that President Joe Biden has approved a disaster declaration for Michigan due to last month's last month’s heavy rainfall that led to basement and street flooding in the Detroit area.

Bay County microchip maker building $300 million plant with 150 new jobs

SK Siltron CSS is expanding its production of parts for electric vehicles, creating 150 new jobs in Bay County!

In Congress, I’m working to expand the electric vehicle tax credit for consumers to help create good-paying Michigan jobs and help reduce carbon emissions.

Electric vehicles are a win-win when it comes to growing our economy and combatting the climate crisis.

The company plans to more than double its Michigan workforce over the next three years with a new site in Bay City.

Congressman Dan Kildee Announces Monthly Payments for Michigan Families Through the Child Tax Credit

Starting today, Michigan families with children will begin receiving monthly payments from the expanded Child Tax Credit. I worked hard to pass the American Rescue Plan to extend this economic relief to hard-working Michigan families during the pandemic.

If you have children under age six, you may be eligible for up to $3,600. If you have children age six to 18, you may be eligible for up to $3,000.

If you filed a 2019 or 2020 tax return or received an economic stimulus check, no action is needed to receive this credit. If you did not have to file a return, you may still be eligible, and can sign up at www.childtaxcredit.gov to begin receiving payments.

If you have questions, please contact my office at 810-238-8627.

Today I joined Governor Gretchen Whitmer to announce the first state park in Genesee County!

This new state park will be possible thanks to federal resources from the American Rescue Plan, which I fought to pass in Congress.

Located in the heart of Flint near Chevy Commons, this new state park will provide recreational opportunities for residents, create good-paying jobs and help support local businesses.

The perfect storm: poor infrastructure and extreme weather are leaving Michigan vulnerable

Climate change is a national security issue, and one of the reasons we must get serious about rebuilding our outdated infrastructure. Our roads, bridges and power lines aren't equipped to deal with more frequent and worsening storms brought on by climate change.

In Congress, I’ve worked to secure millions in funding to rebuild local roads, bridges and water systems. I will continue to focus on our infrastructure so we can create good-paying jobs and protect Michiganders homes and livelihoods from the effects of climate change.

While tropical storms are threatening the southern United States and extreme heat seriously impacted the Pacific Northwest, Michigan is getting its own

I'm in Flint at the ground-breaking for a new Genesee Health System children’s facility. A key part Flint’s ongoing recovery from the water crisis is monitoring and addressing the long-term impacts of lead exposure. This new facility will provide Flint residents with health care and health assessments to ensure treatment plans for lead exposure are effective.

I've also worked to secure $1.7 million in federal funding for Genesee Health System to provide services for adults, children and families of Genesee County.

I am excited to announce the return of mobile office hours throughout Michigan’s Fifth District, when my office staff will travel across mid-Michigan to meet with constituents and answer questions regarding Social Security benefits, immigration visas or passports, veterans’ benefits, unemployment benefits or eligibility for other federal programs.

Hearing from constituents and helping them with access to federal aid and services is a vital part of my job. It’s important to me to hold mobile office hours in every region that I represent.

‘I can’t live on $709 a month’: Americans on social security push for its expansion

People who work their entire lives and contribute every paycheck should be able to rely on Social Security when they retire and live with dignity. Over two million Michigan seniors, children and individuals with disabilities rely on Social Security.

As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, I've introduced legislation to increase Social Security benefits and strengthen this vital insurance program.

Calls for reform include increasing benefits in line with cost of living as employers provide fewer retirement pensions

This pandemic reminded us how important it is that every family has access to high-speed internet—to learn and work from home, access tele-health services and stay connected to loved ones. Bipartisan education bill signed by Whitmer will distribute $4.4 billion to support schools

As we recover from this pandemic, we must support Michigan students and teachers.

In Congress I worked to pass the American Rescue Plan to help local mid-Michigan schools reopen safely, help our kids catch up academically and address students’ social, emotional and mental health needs resulting from this pandemic. This included over $344 million for K-12 schools in mid-Michigan.

I will continue working to ensure our students, teachers and schools receive the support they need to recover from this pandemic.
