Every time we hit the road, we leave behind more than just tire tracks. Vehicle emissions are a major contributor to air pollution, impacting our air quality and environment. On average, a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons, or over 10,000 pounds, of carbon dioxide per year.

Let’s make a conscious effort to reduce our carbon footprint – carpool, use public transportation, or opt for eco-friendly vehicles. Small changes can make a big difference! By using environmentally friendly modes of transportation, you can help Genesee County reach its goal of healthy, livable, and safe communities through environmental stewardship.

An Air Action! Day has been declared for Genesee County on Tuesday, July 25th. This means that the air quality in our area falls under the “orange” Air Quality Index category and may be unhealthy for sensitive groups such as those who have asthma. For those who are in this group, reduce your exposure by limiting your strenuous outdoor activity if possible. For more info, visit: https://www.airnow.gov/?city=Flint&state=MI&country=USA

Also remember to make clean air choices such as deferring the use of gas-powered engines; walk, bike, carpool, or use transit; and link errands in one trip.

Notice: Cancellation of the August 22, 2023, Recycle Day Event

The Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission (GCMPC) provides free and accessible household hazardous waste (HHW) disposal opportunities for Genesee County residents. During 2023, Recycle Day collection events have been in high demand and an unprecedented amount of waste quantities per vehicle have been dropped-off. In 2022, an average of 150 pounds per vehicle were dropped-off at events compared to an average of 210 pounds per vehicle so far in 2023. Due to these unexpected high waste quantities, GCMPC is projected to exceed the existing budget to carry out all the 2023 events and as such, will be cancelling the August 22nd Recycle Day event. Please be aware that the Recycle Day events scheduled for July 25, 2023, and August 8, 2023, will still occur as scheduled.

Increasing demand for HHW disposal combined with rising costs to pay for collection and disposal has prompted GCMPC to explore other potential options for HHW collection. To give context for rising costs, in 2019 GCMPC spent $63 per vehicle that attended Recycle Day events compared to a cost of $181 per vehicle in 2023.

GCMPC has identified a site and is working toward a goal to establish a permanent recycling drop-off facility, replacing the current event format. The facility will provide convenience to residents by being open on a more consistent basis while supporting financial efficiencies for the collection of hard-to-dispose materials. By canceling the August 22nd Recycle Day event, additional funding will be saved to reach the goal of establishing this proposed facility.

If you are looking for other locations to dispose of your materials, visit the drop off center directory on GCMPC’s website at: http://gcmpc.org/drop-off-center-directory/.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Recycle Email address at [email protected].
