Freedom Isn't Free

On March 29, 1973, the United States withdrew the last American troops and effectively ended its direct military involvement in Vietnam. Although numbers vary from source to source, More than 58,000 American soldiers lost their lives , over 303,000 Americans were wounded, roughly 2,300 were MIA and 766 were taken as POW.

Today, March 29th, we pay special tribute to the Veterans of the Vietnam War. We offer them the thanks and welcome home they should have received when they returned. We pay tribute to the fallen, the missing, the wounded and the MILLIONS who served!

I was twelve when the last of our troops came back from Vietnam. My voice wasn't very loud, but I didn't spit and I didn't call names. I come from a long line of Veterans who stood up for America when needed. Some of my family and many of the young men from my small Michigan town put on the uniform during the Vietnam War ... some of them never came home. They, as all of our nation's Military Veterans, will always have my respect and undying gratitude for the sacrifices they've made.

Hundreds of thousands of service men and women were honored this Veterans Day. But there's one thing those vets are asking for… the right to vote with their form of identification.

Today a majority of Senators voted to underfund the VA by $850 million. So when these folks go back to their home states, attend ceremonies, take photos with men and women in uniform, and give speeches about their profound gratitude for the veterans and their families, remember this vote.

90-Year-Old WWII Vet Who Wanted to Stay in His Home is Evicted on Stretcher

The story of Johnnie H. Hodges, a 90-year-old Navy veteran of World War II and the home that he lived in for some 60 years is chockfull of sadness and missed chances. Hodges lived in his Buffalo, NY. home with his wife for decades and about four years ago Hodges spent most of his income caring for h…

Lindsey Graham: Retired Veterans Must Pay More For Their Healthcare

“The retired Tricare (veterans military healthcare program) community is going to have to increase over time the amount they pay to make it sustainable…about 5 percent of the money to pay Tricare bills comes from the patient population. In the private sector, it’s about 20 [percent]. So over time, we’re going to have to ask Tricare retirees to contribute more to make Tricare more sustainable” said Graham at another Atlantic Council conference

Stop Fast Track Now! ← Flush the TPP!

The bill will now go to the Senate for a vote. The first vote is expected on Tuesday and if that passes, a second and final vote on Wednesday.

If it passes in the Senate, it will go to the president’s desk to be signed. The White House is already backing off its ‘promise’ not to sign Fast Track if Trade Adjustment Assistance doesn’t pass. Remember that the TPP and the other two treaties are the president’s highest priorities.

Start contacting Senators now and tell them to vote “No” on Fast Track! The House Fast Track bill is worse than the Senate version because according to Arthur Stamoulis of Citizens Trade Campaign, it “would weaken human trafficking measures; eliminate simple currency measures and other enforcement provisions; and even prohibit the consideration of climate solutions in future trade negotiations.”

Here are the Democrats who voted for Fast Track last time with phone numbers and twitter handles:

Michael Bennet (CO) 202 224 5852 @senbennetco
Maria Cantwell (WA) 202 224 3441 @cantwellpress
Ben Cardin (MD) 202 224 4524 @senatorcardin
Tom Carper (DE) 202 224 2441 @senatorcarper
Chris Coons (DE) 202 224 5042 @sencoonsoffice
Dianne Feinstein (CA) 202 224 3841 @senfeinstein
Heidi Heitkamp (ND) 202 224 2043 @senatorheitkamp
Tim Kaine (VA) 202 224 4024 @senkaineoffice
Claire McCaskill (MO) 202 224 6154 @mccaskilloffice
Patty Murray (WA) 202 224 2621 @pattymurray
Bill Nelson (FL) 202 225 5274 @senbillnelson
Jeanne Shaheen (NH) 202 224 2841 @senatorshaheen
Mark Warner (VA) 202 224 2023 @markwarner
Ron Wyden (OR) 202 224 5244 @ronwyden

It looks like the Senate could pass Fast Track this Wednesday and that means it would go to the President’s desk for his signature. Obama has a signing ceremony for the TPP at the end of June but he needs Fast Track first.

John McCain Says American Workers Shouldn’t Be Protected If We Can Get Cheap Goods

In a single sentence, McCain revealed his indifference towards the plight of American workers and U.S based small businesses that would be adversely affected by a trade agreement which favors the interests of large multinational corporations.

In McCain’s mind, bringing in cheap imports is more important than protecting American jobs. Senator McCain has never had a strong voting record on defending American workers. However, his rhetoric stating that people don’t deserve protection from detrimental trade deals, further confirms what little regard Senator McCain has for American workers.

Senator McCain defended his support for the TPP, by arguing that cheap goods are more important than protecting American workers.

LAST CHANCE TO STOP FAST TRACK

URGENT: The House plans to vote on Fast Track tomorrow. Tell them to VOTE NO! http://lil.ms/ta1/2wsk9r -Chris, Working America

We’re hearing that Fast Track may come up for a vote on Friday, June 12 and this could be our last chance to stop this bad trade policy. If we don’t act now, Fast Track could go into effect and our jobs could be closer to being sent overseas. Please take a moment now and take action.

71 years ago today, in largest seaborne invasion in history, 73,000 Americans landed in Normandy during World War II.

Let us never forget 'the longest day' and the sacrifices of tens of thousands of Allied forces, many who gave their lives on those beaches to protect and defend our country's freedoms. #DD71
