The Florence County Museum is entering an exciting new chapter as work continues on a major expansion designed to strengthen the museumβs role as a cultural hub for the P*e Dee region.
Construction officially began on August 1, 2026, setting in motion a multiβyear effort that will bring new galleries, improved facilities, and enhanced visitor experiences.
Early phases of the project are now underway, including site preparation and updates to the museumβs outdoor spaces. Visitors may notice changes around the building as crews begin clearing areas, adjusting access points, and preparing the courtyard for future development.
Florence County has partnered with McMillan, Pazdan, and Smith Architecture of Columbia, SC, to guide the expansionβs design. Collins & Almers Architecture of Florence, SC, is serving as the local architectural liaison, while Thompson Turner Construction of Sumter, SC, will oversee construction efforts.
The museum is expected to remain partially open until October 2027, when it will close temporarily to allow for final installation and finishing work. A grand unveiling of the redesigned and expanded museum is anticipated for early 2028.
