Paid Internship Opportunity at Rogers Library! Interested in history, archives, libraries, museums, or public history? Rogers Library is currently accepting applications for a PEAK-funded internship in the Arundel Room Archives and Special Collections!

This is a great opportunity for FMU students to gain hands-on experience working with historical collections while learning more about archival practices, preservation, research, digitization, exhibits, and outreach.

In recognition of the 250th birthday of the United States and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a new exhibit at the James A. Rogers Library highlights the important and complex roles African Americans played during the American Revolutionary War.

African Americans participated in the war by the thousands, fighting on the side of both the British and the Patriots as enslaved people and freemen. Many took up arms with the promise of freedom after the war—a promise that, unfortunately, was often not kept.

The exhibit also recognizes those who contributed in other ways, including Phillis Wheatley, who fought with the power of her pen, and Crispus Attucks, a former slave and one of the first casualties of the American Revolution.

Visit the AAC display case at Rogers Library to learn more about the African Americans whose experiences and contributions are an important part of the story of the American Revolution.

Stop by the library this week and check out a book from our “Blind Date with a Book” display!

The titles are covered up, but there is a short description that lets you know what type of book is inside. You’ll need your FMU ID to check out a book, and you get to keep the sticker, bookmark, and I Spy included with it!

We encourage everyone to take a chance and read a book they might not have picked up otherwise. You never know—you might discover a new favorite!

💙Years of Service. Years of Friendship. One Shared Milestone.❤️

What a difference 10 years makes! For this , we’re celebrating a journey that reflects not only professional growth, but years of friendship and shared experiences.

The James A. Rogers Library proudly congratulates Ms. Faith Keller, Head of Reference; Mr. Steven Sims-Brewton, Head of Access Services; and Dean of the Library, Ms. Demetra Walker on their promotion to the rank of Professor at Francis Marion University!

Ten years between these photos represents years of service, collaboration, growth, laughter, and friendship, along with a shared commitment to Rogers Library, our students, faculty, and the FMU community.

From then to now, they have grown together as colleagues and friends, making the achievement of Professor rank together an especially meaningful milestone.

Here’s to the years behind them, the memories made along the way, and many more years of friendship and service ahead. Congratulations, Professors Keller, Sims-Brewton, and Walker! 🎉📚

Now that the semester is underway, here’s a friendly reminder that the James A. Rogers Library is here to support you throughout the semester!

Whether you need help with research, finding sources, using library databases, locating materials, studying, printing, or simply finding a welcoming place to get some work done, our library faculty, staff, and student assistants are here to help.

Sunday: 2:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Monday–Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Saturday: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Celebrating 20 Years of Service!

The James A. Rogers Library proudly congratulates Nathan Flowers, Head of Systems Librarian and Professor, on receiving his 20 Years of Service Award with the State of South Carolina and Francis Marion University! 💙❤️

A familiar face to many across FMU, Nathan is known for building connections with faculty, welcoming new faculty to campus, and helping them become familiar with both library and campus resources. He is equally committed to assisting our students and supporting the FMU community wherever he can.

In celebration of the 175th anniversary of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, a new exhibit at Rogers Library highlights several in-house copies from the early to mid-20th century, when Moby-Dick was elevated to celebrity status by academic and pleasure readers alike.

Originally published in 1851, Moby-Dick struggled to garner favorable reception and would not be regarded as the popular novel it is today until the 1920s, long after Melville’s death in 1891. Its publication history shares a meaningful message: initial “failure” does not always represent the value of the work.

The exhibit also includes illustrated editions and variants, along with digital titles that highlight the convenience of the library’s eBooks and demonstrate how modern authors have applied new lenses of research to this classic piece of American literature.

As commencement weekend comes to a close, the James A. Rogers Library would like to bid a heartfelt farewell to the Spring Class of 2026. 🎓📚

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey through late-night studying, research projects, group work, and moments of growth along the way. Watching you cross the stage this weekend is a reminder of all the hard work and determination that brought you here.
