Association leadership spent the week in Washington DC advocating for the fire service in Mississippi. We discussed funding opportunities and challenges, regulations that hinder the fire service, and even touched on a few hot topic issues back home. Our DC legislative delegation is very supportive of fire services and the first responder community in our state .

It was an honor to meet with these public servants who were in D.C. to advocate on behalf of our first responders. Support of our fire service is vital to protect and grow our communities as our firefighters carry out their mission to save lives and protect property.

The National Firefighter Registry for Cancer (NFR) is an initiative led by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to better understand cancer risk among firefighters and strengthen long-term firefighter health protections.

All firefighters (career, volunteer, wildland, and combination) are eligible to participate. The NFR represents the largest effort ever undertaken to study cancer in the fire service and to identify ways to reduce risk and improve prevention.

To register will take 30 minutes of a firefighter's time. The questions aim to gather information about a firefighter's exposure to chemicals on the fireground and their fire service history. If 50% of your department registers, you will be recognized as a Gold Helmet department. You can also share this information on your social media pages. Please encourage your firefighters to participate in this important program.

We appreciate the members of the House stepping up for first responders in this great state. It’s time for the members of the Senate to support this effort. Instead of pointing “down the hall” at what is wrong, how about looking “down the hall” for what is right .

There has been much discussion today about HB 1392 and how it could possibly affect funding in the fire service. The leadership teams of the MSFCA, MFFA, and PROFAM are aware of the bill and working with legislators to clarify what is and is not the purpose of this bill. We have all heard for several years that RFTAP was not working as it once did. The legislature took note of this as evidenced by the number of bills introduced this session, dealing with this subject.

Over the past several years, we have made great strides in many areas including a significant increase in Rebate Funds. It is our understanding Rebate Funds are untouched by this bill. We sincerely hope that is indeed the case. We will be working diligently over the next few weeks to ensure fire services does not go backwards but continues to move forward. We will keep you informed as we move forward.
