Bread for Life

Bread for Life Bread for Life is a campaign to help eliminate hunger in the Flushing schools in the name of Jesus! Each week, Flushing Michigan area churches and volunteers prepare bags that are packed with healthy foods for local school age children to take home for the weekend.

Operating as usual

Just a friendly reminder that we do not have bread for life this week. We will resume on Tuesday January 5th.

Today is day 10 in the countdown of the 12 days before Christmas as we share another worthy ministry for you to bless and support. Today I would like to encourage you to consider supporting Holy Cross's own Bread for Life Ministry. Kelly Jacobs, its director, told me yesterday that we are now feeding an all-time record 109 children in need every week. Because of Covid, our major fundraiser for Break for Life- the Wake the Bear Run was forced to reschedule its run date and then convert the run date to a virtual setting this fall. We raised a good amount of funds thanks to the generosity of so many runners and businesses, but it was still substantially less than what we normally raise. We have received one unexpected grant from our Flushing Community Foundation early on the pandemic which was very helpful, but now with record numbers of children needing assistance our challenge is to keep feeding all of these wonderful children throughout the rest of the school year. If you would like to help out - you can give through our Holy Cross APP - @TheCross clicking on the "GIVE" button on the home page or going to our website - and scroll down on the home page to DONATE and indicate your gift is for Bread for Life. Or you can send in your gift to Holy Cross Lutheran Church 1209 Coutant St. Flushing, MI 48433.

Reminder: Pick up is tonight from 5:30 - 6:00p.m.

2020 has certainly been keeping us on our toes. With Flushing Community Schools closing through the end of this year, we wanted to let our Bread for Life families know that we will still be giving out bags on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:00 through December 22nd and we will resume after the first of the year on January5th. If you are not a part of this program and are in need, please contact your school coordinator as soon as possible. If you have any questions please contact me through facebook messenger. Thank you

Bread for Life Coordinator

Hello All,
It has been a while since I posted anything on our page, for which I am very sorry. I've been working on a way to keep our volunteers safe while making sure the children in our community who need food bags will receive them. I have come up with a plan, and we will begin bagging food this Tuesday, November 3rd and bags will be distributed to Flushing schools on Thursday, November 5th. For those who have signed up to pick up bags instead of receiving them at school should come to Holy Cross Lutheran Church on Tuesday between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Drive up to the entrance doors and I will be there to give you your bags. We are not allowing pack your own bags. If you have not filled out your registration forms or have not received them, please contact your school coordinator. If you have volunteered in the past and would like to do so again, please contact me at [email protected] for more information or you can send a Facebook message.
Thank you,

Hello all,
Even though Flushing Community Schools are closed we will still be continuing our Bread for Life program, just in a new way. Beginning Thursday, March 19th, families who are currently signed up for the program will be able to pick up their bag(s) on Thursdays from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. A parent ID and name of child(ren) in the program will be needed. This is a drive-up service at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Drive through is located in the parking lot of the church. No pack your own bags will be done. We are unsure how long we will be doing this system, but are trying to make every effort in providing meals for our children over the weekend.

To my driving volunteers: Thank you for the time you have spent driving our food to the schools. We will let you know if and when we will need you again this year.

To my bagging volunteers: Because the Flushing schools were not open on Friday the 13th, I will not need help in bagging this week. Thank you for volunteering. I will call you to set up a volunteer rotation.

Thank you to all for your support and understanding

Kelly Jacobs
Bread for Life Coordinator
