On Tuesday, December 22, A Welcome Home to the troops will be held at Bishop International Airport. We will be greeting all Active Duty and Veterans arriving and leaving by air from 9 am to 9 pm. All are given a rousing 'Welcome Home'. Everyone is welcome to join the flag line and if you have a 3 x 5 flag on a pole, please bring it.
Free Parking for participants is behind the maintenance building across the street from the airport. There will be a shuttle to take you to the front door.
This event is coordinated and sponsored by the Patriot Guard Riders and the Vietnam Veterans Association groups throughout Genesee County.

The American Legion, Flushing Post 283, performed a ceremony Wednesday, November 11, honoring our American Military personnel. A friendly, larger than usual crowd, was a pleasure to mingle with. Thank you once again American Legion for remembering our veterans! I love Flushing!!!

Sunday afternoon at 4pm the American Legion, Flushing Post 283, performed a flag raising ceremony at the Flushing Museum (Depot). What a wonderful tribute to our "heros" who have defended our country's freedom throughout it's history. Thank you American Legion for your service to our city by keeping the memory our our "heros" alive.

The American Legion, Flushing Post #283 conducted the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Flushing Cemetery, at the Soldiers & Sailors Monument, 6p, Monday evening. Thank you so very much gentlemen for keeping alive the contributions of our fallen service men and women! Thank you Dan Hays for enriching the ceremony with your wonderful, God-given vocal talent! And thank you Mike "Flagman" Bowen for your great example of patriotism! You folks are a big part of why I love Flushing so much. May God richly bless you!!!

FREE EVENT AT THE AIR ZOO FOR VETERAN, ACTIVE DUTY, AND RESERVE MILITARY PERSONNEL! Retired Lieutenant General Duane T. Thiessen, former commander of the United States Marine Corps Forces Pacific and current President and CEO of the National Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, will visit the Air Zoo Aviation Museum in Portage, MI on Thursday, December 11th!

Lt. Gen. Thiessen will spend the morning in the Air Zoo's restoration center working with students from the Western Michigan Aviation Academy on the Air Zoo’s restoration of a World War II FM2 Wildcat fighter, followed by a talk at the Air Zoo's main campus at 2pm covering his experiences in the Marine Corps, leadership, and the importance of historical preservation. A Q & A and meet and greet will follow. ADMISSION TO THE AIR ZOO AND THIS EVENT ARE FREE FOR ALL VETERAN, ACTIVE DUTY, AND RESERVE MILITARY PERSONNEL, and included in paid general admission for non-military guests. Lt. Gen. The Air Zoo Aviation Museum in Portage, MI honors our veterans all year round with FREE general admission for all active, reserve, and veteran military personnel. Tomorrow, Nov. 11th, is Veterans Day, and the Air Zoo would like to thank all of those who have served, or are currently serving, in the Armed Forces. We appreciate and honor all you have done to keep our country safe. The Air Zoo is a great place to spend this special day, and in addition our amazing collection of aircraft, exhibits, rides, and activities, we will have a special, award-winning student exhibition on the Geneva Convention presented its creator, student Caroline Yap. This amazing project outlines the true stories of 5 axis and allied prisoners of war, including a German soldier who was held at Fort Custer, and is sure to be fascinating.
There will be a POW/MIA ceremony and flag retirement tonight at Bluebell beach on Bray Rd. The ceremony starts at 7 pm, with the flag retirement following. There is a beautiful permanent memorial there for those who can't make it tonight. American Legion Post 283 Flushing, Michigan has been represented in the past and the ceremony is very well done. If anyone can attend from the post, please take your Legion cap.
April Meeting Notice: Our next meeting is this Thursday at the Flushing Historical Society Building at 7:30pm. We will be discussing the upcoming raffle ticket sales, spring events, and more. Meetings don't last more than an hour or so. If you are interested in a post in the Flushing area, come on by!
Veterans, you can now get a 'veteran' designation on your state Driver's license or ID to assist you with obtaining your deserved veterans discounts.
As of January 1, 2014 Veterans in Michigan can have their Veteran's status listed on their Driver's License or State ID. To do this, you need to take your DD-214 to the Secretary of State office when you renew your license. If you want to do it before that renewal, you will have to pay for a replacement license.
