Harlem Maenner- und Damenchor

Harlem Maenner- und Damenchor We are a German American social singing group. A group of adventurous German immigrants met at John Gaden's saloon for singing and Gemuetlichkeit.

The Harlem Men's and Women's Chorus began in 1890 in Harlem,(now Forest Park) Illinois, as the Harlem Maennerchor. A women's chorus, "Almira", was founded in 1910 and was the forerunner of the Forest Park Damenchor, founded in 1962. The Harlem Maennerchor and the Forest Park Damenchor shared their rehearsal times at the VFW hall in Forest Park, sponsored joint concerts and social events, and even

shared officers and board members. In 1991, this close association culminated in a merging of the two choruses into the mixed chorus now known as the Harlem Men's and Woman's Chorus. The Harlem Maenner- und Damenchor is a German American singing club. We have a concert once a year to perform the music we have worked on. We partake in many local events to help raise money for the club. Some of the events are, Summer fest, German Fest, The 4th of July, and many other local events.

The Saengerfest in Peoria is now history... - it was quite a nice event. The "Empfangskonzert" on Friday evening had all the districts singing some of their favorite songs. The "Hauptkonzert" on Saturday in the Civic Arena with over 800 singers was quite impressive. And the "Frueschoppen" on
Sunday at Hickory Grove was a pleasant wrap-up of the weekend. ph.

Our Story

The Harlem Maenner- und Damenchor is a German/American chorus. The Harlem Men’s and Women’s Chorus was was founded in 1890 in Harlem (now Forest Park), Illinois as the Harlem Maennerchor. A group of adventurous German immigrants met a John Gaden’s saloon for singing, (drinking) and “Gemuetlichkeit”.

At our “Annual Concert & Dance” on the first Saturday of November, we present the music that we work on during our Tuesday night’s rehearsals at the “Eagle’s Hall” in Forest Park. In addition, members of our chorus partake in many local events to help promote German music and culture. Some of the events are St. Patrick’s Day Parade, German Fest, Summer Fest, Fourth of July, Christmas Caroling.

Very cute German American Children's Picture Book. Great for getting kids interested in the German culture and learning a few German words. They will want to learn more.
